Man Tased at Girl Talk show at the Gargoyle

Sat Nov 10, 2007 at 12:32:44 AM

[Ed. Note, Thursday, November 15, 7:20 p.m.: For a more detailed account of the incident at the Gargoyle, including an update on the student tased and what has happened in the intervening week, please see this blogpost. -- Annie Zaleski]

A man was tased at Friday evening’s Girl Talk concert at Washington University’s Gargoyle Club after resisting arrest and taking his clothes off.

According to a Gargoyle Student Committee member and other eyewitnesses, trouble began when the man was asked to leave by concert security. When he resisted, the police were summoned. According witnesses, police asked the man, who was topless, to put his shirt back on. He then began to remove his pants. Witnesses say police then seized the man and began handcuffing him. When he resisted a taser was used, an officer on the scene confirmed.

“He was tased in the ass for a prolonged period of time,” one female witness stated. “It was terrible.”

After the incident, the lights in the Gargoyle, which is a room in the basement of Washington University’s student center on Forsyth Avenue, were turned on. Gargoyle Student Committee members asked the crowd to leave immediately and notified that police were on their way. An explanation for the abrupt ending was not given.

Confused and sweaty concertgoers slowly headed for the exits and a large crowd gathered just outside the door. Several people yelled at the police officers standing near the exits, “Don’t taze me bro,” and “You serve us.”

An incredulous and sweat-drenched Gregg Gillis (whose DJ name is Girl Talk), unaware of what had happened, took the microphone after the lights went up and said, “What the fuck St. Louis? That was a really uncool way to end the show. How late can I play till?”

After learning he was done for the night the mash-up DJ said, “Somebody tell me where I’m playing right now. Who has a PA at their house? I’m going to play all night.”

One audience member spoke up and Gillis said, “We’re going to Sammy’s house,” and left the stage.

All told, the sold-out show lasted less than hour and was plagued by sound problems. Twice fans dancing on the stage with Gillis stepped on and disconnected the cords that powered the amplifiers. Many people had waited in line for more than hour in hopes of getting last-minute tickets to the show.

We’ll have more details, including the police report on the incident, when they become available.

Greg says:

I saw this happen-
The guy was definitely high or something, and he had been pushing and threatening people all night. There was one point were several concert goers chanted to get him out.

The bouncers were trying to get him to leave (physically pushing him through the door) when he dropped his pants. It was immediately after that when the officer showed up. He tried to cuff him but he shouted and resisted. He tased him once (a very short shock) but he still resisted. Then he tased him continuously for several seconds. Then the officer got the cuffs on and took him out.

K says:

Yeah I was getting some air right outside the door when they brought the guy outside to the hallways from the show.

I think instead of having fat, strong bald guys yelling at him they should have found a couple of his friends and let them take care of their friend.

FUCK cops. Especially when they're meddling in on-campus matters.

Dale says:

Assuming the article and everyone here's talking about the same guy, he apparently wasn't there with any friends. Before any of the music started he was shoving through the crowd on his own pretty aggressively and grabbing people (both guys and girls) inappropriately. When people started telling him to back off he'd try to pick fights with them, repeatedly asking them to "please start something".

He was warned by the staff before the show ever started and moved towards the back of the room but once the show started he got right back into his grabbing and shoving. The last I saw of him was when he was being guided towards the back of the stage by one of the Gargoyle staffers after it had been cleared .

As to the power lines being tripped over, it didn't start happening until Greg moved the table to the floor. I'd say if you were going to blame anyone you'd probably blame the Gargoyle for not having adequate security before the concert. The table got moved (presumably) because the stage was way too crowded and getting dangerous. I was in the front row of the floor and had to catch people falling off the stage several times.

The venue initially only had one bouncer visible who seemed reluctant to engage the crowd, leaving most of the crowd control to one staffer while a huge amount of people were trying to get on the stage. Once the table got moved a lot of the wires were getting tripped over, probably because the tape that had been holding them down got removed.

Thanks to all who came out. To echo Annie, it really is terrible that one kid could ruin a show. We hope this will not deter either students or members of the public from continuing to attend our shows. Again, thanks to all who came.

I hope and pray you never need a cop. What a spoiled little brat you grew to be

i been to my hare of concerts and my hare of arrests and if i got tased in the ass someones heaad was gonna come rolling off. that officer hould be imprisoned for agrevated sexual assault, regrdless what he wa doing it for

Dunkin McNutz says:

ishootback: You Sir, are an idiot. Learn how to use your "s" key, it's between "A" and "D" F-tard.

I've posted in already on the other story, but I'll do it here too as a public service. Apparently party was moved to frat house, and the entire business with the ass tasing is now hottest music news on the web: (just one example)

G.W. Carver says:

The shutdown of the Gargoyle Club show should not have happened at all, bouncers should have spoted the man warned him to stop several times. It is very apparent that he didn't so at that point he should have been escorted off the floor (By force) and told by the staffers to leave or the cops would be called, all in a office...out of view of the people. Then call the cops and haul his ass to the station. There is no need to ruin everybodys evening, that is in a perfect world and the cables getting disconected, its a accident..happens all the time. Although Gargoyle staff should have thought that Greg might want to move the table for some reason be it to the floor or just in the way, and taped (or put a rug over and taped that down) the cables better so they couldn't be disconected so easly

You should support the police, that kid was out of hand! Unfortunately the concert was ended to early.

rev says:

man I'm looking forward to the girl talk show ceasing to be the only thing anyone can blog about...

it would seem that today's youth has a knee-jerk reaction to hate the police, regardless of the circumstances...now I wasn't at the show, so I don't know how out of hand half-nekkid guy was, or how much excessive force the cop used, but I pray you folks who live under the moniker of fuck the police need a cop someday.

some cops abuse their power, some see it as a great responsibility, not unlike anyone else in any other career. I've had my fair share of bastard cops acting the prick, but I've also had moments where the police were my saviours...

sounds to me like half-nekkid guy got what he had coming to him...

seems to me that the worst thing for the fans that night was having to go to a frat-house to finish the show...

cops aren't evil....republicans are.

okay, getting off my soapbox, now...

on an unrelated note:
come see strawfoot open up for fishbone with the alley cats 7 day from now...tickets are selling out FAST.

the man says:

Why do you people say fuck the police? Just ask yourself who do you call when you need help ? What if all the police in america didnt show up for work? You my friend would be fucked.

"K says:

Ok good, the next time some creepy asshole starts to follow you(on campus), dont call the cops. Let him follow you all the way to your room. Im sure he would be happy you didnt call the cops.

"ishootback says:

spolied are we ?
#1 drugs are bad
#2 the "s" key will not hurt you
#3 wow your a dumbass
#4 stop watching TV, you obviously cant handle it.
#5 "agrevated sexual assault" Do you know what that is ?

For those who supported the officers, just know they were doing their job. They did it by the book, someone resisted arrest and they got what was comring to them.

They ended the concert becuase, a small riot could have occurred.

Anon. says:

I'm looking forward to the day when the Rev stops trying to turn every thread into a plug for his band.

rev says:

perhaps you should spend more time denouncing those bands that NEVER promote as opposed to those that actually do their best to let folks know about a show, in every way humanly possible, thereby helping all the bands in the lineup as well as the venue...

I only post on threads I have some sort of opinion on...such as this one, where my main point was, kids should stop lumping all cops together and appreciate the fact that some do give a damn about serving and protecting...

when you're able to use yer real name, and actually contribute something worthwhile to the conversation, we'll talk...until then, well...

hugs and french kisses, anon.

no offense, rev, but i had the exact same reaction as Anon. did to your post. feel free to state your opinion on the blog post at hand, but please keep the show promotion to appropriate posts involving st louis concert calendars and goings-on and the like.

rev says:

groan.

it's amazing how many people bitch about flagging scenes, and a disjointed music community...it's amazing how many venue owners tell me how frustrated they are with all the bands that don't promote...how too many "promoters" don't promote...it's disheartening to see empty venues when good bands are playing, simply because they don't feel like working...

it's also uplifting to see packed houses for the bands that do work their arses off, like me...

but, that's fine...

respect.

Jason Toon says:

rev, there's a difference between promoting your band and spamming the hell out of any message board that'll have you. If everybody did that, nobody would bother to look at these comments because every comment would be some chump begging people to come see his lame band.

Yes, that's my real name.

Matt Harnish says:

I think ten lines of relevant comment & one line of self-promotion is an acceptable ratio. And I always kinda read it like it's the Rev's signature, like

"Blah blah blah blah blah"
love,
the Rev
ps-here's where I'm playing.

But, really, whatever.
