The Trade: St. Louis' New Rock & Roll Bar

Thu May 01, 2008 at 05:37:02 PM

That tattoo-esque logo right there is for The TRADE, a new bar opening on Friday, May 9, in the same building as gay bar the Complex Nightclub (3515 Chouteau; 314-772-2645). Occupying a ground-level space that's been vacant for about a year-and-a-half, the 125-person-capacity bar is described by its proprietors as "tattoos and rock & roll."

Still, the TRADE won't have live bands or shows; instead, it will often feature a variety of familiar DJs from around St. Louis, spinning all permutations of the rock & roll genre. Moreover, perhaps one of the coolest features of the venue will be its jukebox: a vintage model donated by co-owner Joe Hedgpeth's grandmother that contains old-school country & western 45 RPM records

"This city needed a place to chill out and listen to rock & roll," says co-owner Wil Pelly.

Pelly and the other three co-owners of the TRADE - Hedgpeth, Jason (Homey) Smith and Rachel Smith -- are largely seasoned bar veterans who have worked at the Complex, the Hi-Pointe and the Creepy Crawl, so they know quite a bit about music.

But says Hedgpeth, "it was Wil's brilliant idea to get us all into this." They approached the owner of the Complex, Howard Meyer, who was immediately enthusiastic and supportive.

"This is a really hot space," Meyer says.

And despite the fact that the TRADE is in the same building as a gay bar, Pelly is quick to say that it's "a completely everything-friendly bar." Adds Hedgpeth: "Leave your ego at the door."

On the day I visited, the four co-owners were still in the midst of working on the space to make it presentable to the public. The general layout is like this, though: Walk into the Complex's entrance (see photo below) and head directly to your right. When you walk into the TRADE, the bar is on your left (see the snazzy orange chairs and picture of Sid Vicious), while in front of you toward the back will be dartboards and tables.

Here are the bar's vital statistics:

How can you have such an awesome-looking hole-in-the-wall kinda place and NOT have bands?

tsk tsk.

Rip Hymen says:

So how you gonna keep this place from turning into another fag bar with all of them scaring away your straight customers

yo, none of that "fag bar" crap on this blog, please. we're everything-friendly round these parts as well.

Barnald Steves says:

If your scared of gay folk maybe you should stay home cus they go everywhere my friend.

Matt Harnish says:

Seconded (or I guess thirded), most of the gay folx I know go to many a"straight"bar, and vice versa. Don't worry, though, Rip, odds are they have zero interest in fucking your lame uptight ass. That must really bother you, mango.

Rachel says:

Thanks Matt, the owners of the bar all thank you for that comment.I hope more people will leave comments telling him how ignorant he is,and that if a bar is inviting it doesn't matter what peoples sexual preference is....and you should come and spin for us.

Mike Cracchiolo says:

Man, gay people get into everything.

If you know me (of course you do) I like to sample our fine drinking establisments about town and I have to say not since the demise of the Hipointe have I felt so at home.

You don't have people walking around in their grandfathers clothes acting all holier than thou and playing favorites. You don't have the "I'm too cool for school" jerkoffs ruining your time with immense levels of hipness and ultimately jerkness. You don't have douche bag county folk that forgot their Depends undergarmet helmet in their BMW. All you have is your friends, their friends, some friends of their friends, and a bunch of new people you just haven't met that you'd, of course, like to meet with a badass soundtrack in the backround. It's a check your attitude at the door and join in in the fun (or get the fuck out) kinda place. It's pretty quaint in a rock and roll sort of way. And THANK FRIGGIN JEEBUS you don't have to watch the MF'n sports network while you're drinking.

And, hey, if there is any "gayness" to go around it's just your brain after a few strategically placed alcoholic beverages (JAMESON, in my case). So grow up about the gay stuff. Are we on a farm in FENTON or what? Are you scared that gay people are more manly than you and have to compensate by actin all manly like? Get a friggin hobby fruitcake and stay home. This place isn't for you mister 4H.

So, in conclusion, I'm proud to say that The Trade is a friggin cool place to hang about, drink, meet people you normally wouldn't talk too, and tell lies. Monumental and funny lies. I know where I'm gonna be for some time to come.

Rachel says:

Ray,I don't think any of us could have said it any better. Thanks Ray

I was with Rip last night. Like tossing a hotdog down a hallway!
