No Nelly Outdoors in Branson

Categories: Nelly

Last night in Branson, Missouri, the board of aldermen nixed a proposed outdoor concert by the Lou's hip-hop superstar, Nelly. According to the Springfield News-Leader:

The Branson Board of Aldermen Tuesday night rejected an appeal from a production company looking to hold an outdoor concert at the Grand Palace featuring the St. Louis rapper on Aug. 21.

City Planning and Development Director Jim Lawton had rejected an application from the theater earlier this month asking for permission for Nelly to perform outside while officials refurbish the interior of the theater.

The city rejected the application because of concerns about parking, noise and crowd control. At the time, City Administrator Dean Kruitof said the city would help the theater get ready for an indoor concert on Aug. 21.

The article goes on to state that the option of having the show indoors isn't a possibility either, because Grand Palace repairs won't be able to be completed in time. Oh, and for the record: Yakov Smirnoff doesn't appear to be performing in Branson during August, so the potential for a Nelly/Yakov team-up -- perhaps with Smirnoff taking Tim McGraw's part on "Over and Over"? -- was always a non-issue.

I think a Yakov/Nelly mashup would be rad (really, Smirnoff should get top billing at this point).

What a country grammar!

I visited Branson for the first time ever this summer. I was surprised to see many empty businesses in a place so frantically hyped as one of the most popular American vacation spots. The music available there is not of interest to anyone with even a little sophistication. Shabby theaters, tired country acts, religious dogma parading as "entertainment." Nelly would be a breath of fresh air in that sad place. Branson, join the 21st century.

haha! @ the yakov impersonator. but for real, I think that Branson, and their "old fashioned" country ways, is a little scared of how off the chain a huge hip hop show like that would be. also, they are prolly mildly afraid of black ppl.

@Anonymous: Ha ha ha, yes, let's keep crap music out of Branson, you might ruin Missouri's cultural oasis. Please don't taint the Baldknobbers show by letting them colored folks in!

Anonymous. White folks are the biggest consumer of rap music out there. Black folks do things that are creative, new and interesting and White folks try and copy them.

That's the way it's always been.

And Branson is such a hotbed of good musical taste after all.

Jonezy says:

for the record, I'm white...and Branson is old, and wore out, and there are as many Midwestern people that like hip hop as there are that like country, and many like both. and yes COLD BEER, you are correct, white youth is the biggest consumer of commercial rap music...ie...NELLY. Additionally, the hip hop scene is very multicultural. I respect all artforms...but if you believe that all hip hop music is "bitches and hoes", and shooting people, then you should also believe that all country music is "I lost my girl, and my dog, and I'm drinking Stag on my tractor."....both of which we know are silly stereotypes. Just because you like country music, doesn't mean that other money-spending, civilized, contributors to society, don't also like hip hop..so Mike and Anonymous, GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE. Nelly did a country song...i bet you know the words to that one:)

The good people of Branson are obviously smart enough to realize that whenever a large group of blacks are involved, TNB will always follow.

Considering it's been 10 years since Nelly's been relevant, he probably just wanted to preview his future digs.

WOW! And this is coming form who and where? A progressive, hip, open minded individual on the left or lefter coast? Every part of your comment is a put down of Branson and the people of the area. Then again, Nashville doesn't have a star that's trying shamelessly to create controversy by calling for a concert in the heart of hip-hop. Use your internet connection for a little research and you'll find that hip-hop can only wring their hands and drool at the audience (sales) main stream country music has.

Oh, and your last comment denies you as the bigot you are.
