Rare Radiohead Muxtape, Part III

Either the boys in Radiohead are some prolific mofos or I'm insane. Without really even trying, my iTunes has accumulated no less than 522 songs that answer to the search term of "Radiohead." But here's the deal: 187 of those songs are from the bootleg Towering Above the Rest rarities collection, and I've probably only listened to 60% of those songs ever.

Still, I'm not proud of these 522 songs. If anything, they make me wonder about my mental health. But I'm a helpless spontaneous downloader, troller of music blogs and categorizing master, so there you have it. It's not my fault. In any case, here are some of my favorite songs that get a Radiohead tag even though they aren't *technically* Radiohead. Read the list and you'll see what I mean.
While some are skeptical, I stand by my adoration of the album. Is it because it sounds verrrrry 1990s -- and I still have a soft spot for that post-shoegaze, pre-Britpop sound? Is it because it's so very catchy? Is it because it's Radiohead, and I love everything they do? Read my piece; perhaps that will explain all.

Part Two of our rare Radiohead series features several songs which date from the band's Honey era, including "Inside My Head" -- which lost out to "Creep" as a single, but appeared as a b-side on that release -- and "Pop Is Dead," a UK-only single with a ridiculous video (view it after the jump) that the band left off its debut. ("Stupid Car" and "Yes I Am" are also early b-sides.)

The quintet features vocalist Rebecca Reardon (Dear Calamity), guitarist Gerry Good (Brain Regiment), keyboardist Kat Kissick on keyboards, bassist Jennifer Conroy and Potter on drums.

Potter describes the group's sound as "sort of a Sahara Hotnights/Pixies girly poprock type thing," although to me, the demos on its MySpace page remind me of the earliest, bluesiest Gossip songs, with hints of the Detroit Cobras and Holly Golightly thrown in for good measure.

And don't worry: Left Arm isn't going anywhere, Potter's playing in both bands. Midtown Thieves don't have any shows scheduled yet, but we'll let you know when they do.

In a blog post from last week, Chad Garrison reported on RFT freelance photographer Nichole Torpea, who was assaulted at My Chemical Romance's sold-out May 3 Pageant show by someone who she believes was part of the band's security team.

After hearing about the incident, the New Jersey quintet's manager offered to fly Torpea and her boyfriend to New York to photograph the band's tour-ending show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Garrison followed up with Torpea this morning when she returned, and files the following:

Last Friday, May 9, she was given full access to the band, including photo credentials and an invite to the after-party celebrating the end of their concert tour. This time around the photographer had no run-ins with the band’s security. But while she snapped some fine photos of the band that night, Torpea says her favorite shot came the following evening when she ran into actor Will Smith in Times Square.

“He was taking a break from shooting a movie and I asked him if he’d mind taking a photo with me,” Torpea recalls. “He was like, ‘Sure, sweetie.’ He couldn’t have been more of a gentleman.”
