Nelly: Is There Anything He Can't Do?

We all know that Nelly can play basketball. And act. And make platinum records. And for good measure, at Sunday's celebrity softball legends game at Busch Stadium, Nelly was named co-MVP. Why? Well, he slammed a homer in the first inning and made an impressive -- for any game -- diving catch. Even Bobby Knight seemed speechless after that play. Clips below.

St. Louis rapper Tega, of the group Da Camp, died last week from injuries suffered in a May 16 shooting in Wellston, reports the Post-Dispatch.

The 25 year-old (given name Ortega Devon Henderson), died on Wednesday May 27 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Da Camp is best known for their affiliations with Nelly's crew the St. Lunatics and have been featured on tracks with Murphy Lee, including Murph's single "Donkey N Da Back."

Nelly and Titans Quarterback Vince Young Make It Rain, Spark Internet Outrage

Fresh off the St. Lunatics reunion concert at the Pageant this past Sunday, Nelly has taken his show on the road and people have started to take notice. It would be nice if a new hit single was attracting all the attention, but instead he'll have to settle for a struggling NFL quarterback tossing a few wadded up stinkies into the crowd at a benefit concert for a man currently locked for committing felony fraud.

(Take a second to process that last sentence. Slam your head on your desk a few times. Got it? Good.)

The football player is Tennessee Titans quarterback (and former University of Texas star) Vince Young and the felon is founding Geto Boys member Willie D, in jail for scamming people on Ebay. Here's the video of the concert, which was a "Smash the Mic" benefit that went down in Houston on Monday night. It starts to drizzle right about the 1:40 mark:

The sports blogosphere is blowing up with snarky comments and righteous indignation over the footage. Young is coming off an abysmal season in which he lost his starting job to a 37 year-old reformed alcoholic and he has repeatedly vowed that he's getting his off-the-field act together this offseason.

Keegan Hamilton:
It was foolish to arrive on time. Our tickets told us that 'Doors open at 7 p.m.' but as soon as we arrived and saw the line wrapped around the block waiting to get in, we knew, deep down, that we were in for a long night.

It didn't take much time for the first act to take the stage. but it took oh-so-long for the headliner, the St. Lunatics, to finally stride onto the Pageant's stage. Nelly smiled coyly like he knew he was the king of all that he saw, and performed with the entire crew of St. Lunatics in nearly a decade. (City Spud, who was incarcerated in 2000, is now out of prison.)

In the meantime, there was a merciless bombardment of opening acts. It was more of a revue with each playing two or three tracks, ending with their single ("Request that shit!"), and moving on. East St. Louis duo Unladylike was particularly memorable, with the ladies belting out a stream of "mutherfuckers!" with angry growls and that belied their sexy appearances.

This Weekend in Hip-Hop: Nelly at the Pageant and The Derrty DJ's Midwest Summit

I Heart Nelly.jpg
www.zazzle.com
It's a concert ten years in the making: Nelly is headlining a show at the Pageant on Sunday.

He's performed a few times over the past year (making cameos when various St. Lunatics opened for Lil' Wayne and T.I. at separate gigs at Chaifetz Arena) but this is the first time in a long time that the Lou's best-known rapper actually has his name at the top of a marquee.

So what if Brass Knuckles sounded like it was produced by an ADD kid who forgot to take his Ritalin? This is Cornell Hayes Jr people! He's the man who put Missouri on the hip-hop map, made the men and women of St. Louis proud to pronounce here and there hurr and thurr, and wore a band-aid on his face for no good reason and still looked cool.

If you like St. Louis hip-hop, you best be at the Pageant on Sunday. I recommend wearing your Apple Bottom jeans and them boots with the fur.

One thing you may not know, though, is that Nelly's performance is a keynote address of sorts. The second annual Midwest Summit (sponsored by The Derrty DJ's ) kicks off tonight at the Sheraton downtown.

Metric, Doves to Release New Albums + Free MP3s

My pal Quick Draw McHarper in Kansas City blogged these before I had a chance to, so here goes: Britpop stalwarts Doves and Canadian electro-popsters Metric are releasing new albums in the coming months. The latter's new one, Fantasies (publicist issued a correction), comes out April 14, while the former's Kingdom of Rust arrives a week earlier. Click those links to grab the first MP3 from each album. Metric's "Help, I'm Alive" sounds far less abrasive than most of the act's last LP, Live It Out, while Doves' "Jetstream" is no relation to New Order's song of the same name, but is a stylistic cousin: It's a pulsating, meandering electronic number that sounds like the soundtrack to an '80s episode of Nova

Nelly + Ashanti = True Love

Nick passed along this tidbit from yesterday, via PerezHilton.com: Nelly and Ashanti finally made their coupledom public. Aww. Check out this cute photo of the happy couple. According to Perez's post:

Picture%201.JPG

In a new interview, while celebrating his 34th birthday party at Lavo in Vegas on Sunday, Nelly spoke about his gal pal

He says, "That's the thing between me and her, we just like having fun."

Deep!

Unfortunately, Ashanti wasn't at his birthday party this weekend, as she's currently in Japan.

Nelly did admit though that the two of them have been "hanging out for a minute." Though they've been linked together, on and off, for over five years.

And as to how serious their relationship is, Nelly opens up about that as well.

He says, "I think it's always serious when you can hang with a person continuously … and [“still”] have fun."

Awww. So cute!

Nelly Guest Stars on CSI:NY Tomorrow, October 8

Nelly -- whose long-awaited album Brass Knuckles is in stores now -- is also guest-starring on CSI:NY tomorrow night. He plays evil -- and judging from the preview clip on the CBS website, you do not want to fuck with him. The show airs tomorrow night, October 8, at 9 p.m. on CBS.

Show Review: Lil Wayne, Nelly, Murphy Lee, St. Lunatics at Chaifetz Arena, 8/30/08

Last night's Lil Wayne concert at the new Chaifetz Arena included a slew of surprise guests, including Nelly and Birdman, but ultimately it was Weezy's night.

The show, which was announced a little more than two weeks ago, brought in concert-goers who filled the lower portion of the 10,000-seat arena. (The top bowl was nearly empty; not sure if tickets were being sold for that section.)

"I did a lot of collaborations on this album; probably more than I ever have."

"This was like, early '98... Kanye was in New York...He was just getting his grind on and I came up and met him...and we talked and found he was from Chicago and I was from St. Louis...he always said he was going to be exactly where he's at, maybe in a different way, but he knew it. No one believed in himself as much as he did."

Remember what I said last week, that the Jermaine Dupri hint in the '90s Hip-Hop Jam of the Week was important? "Kids were skipping school ... Jordans come out on a Wednesday or a Tuesday... There was about 2,000 other kids...There was a line at the Foot Locker, there was a line at the Champ's, there was a line at the Athlete's Foot...That was just that."
