Tonight! The King Khan & BBQ Show at Off Broadway

Do you get off on original rockers like Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and the Beach Boys? Do you also rock out to Repo Man-style '80s punk like Agnostic Front, the Circle Jerks, and Black Flag?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you will be dragged into the streets and shot if you are not at Off Broadway tonight for The King Khan & BBQ Show.

In the words of the mad Khan himself--as quoted in this week's RFT music feature-- the two-man band is "punk rock meets doo wop," a "crazy spectacle," and a "smorgasbord of ecstasy."

Doesn't that sound delicious?

Tonight: Age of Illumination Release Party at Star Clipper

Benjamin Sawyer, DJ Champ, and Tef Poe kick ass and create comics
Age of Illumination, t
he hip-hop-themed comic book project from Tef Poe, DJ Champ, and illustrator Benjamin Sawyer, drops tonight at Star Clipper, with a release party that kicks off at 6 p.m. Stop by, grab a free copy of the book, and meet the artists.

If you haven't heard, here's the word:

From Flavor Flav's oversize alarm clock to the diamond-encrusted chains of the crunk era, bling has long been a part of hip-hop culture. Comic books, on the other hand, are a relatively new addition, with rap-influenced illustrations from Public Enemy and Madvillain among the only noteworthy examples. Now, thanks to Age of Illumination, an ambitious new project from a trio of St. Louis artists, the two elements will be united with a comic book about a mythical piece of bling.

Age of Illumination consists of a comic book and a concept album. The creators are local rapper Tef Poe (given name: Kareem Jackson), Nicholas "DJ Champ" Randall and comic-book artist Benjamin Sawyer. The first issue of the comic book, a release party for which will be held at Star Clipper Comics on September 16, is an odd mix of historical fantasy, spiritual mumbo jumbo and glorification of the St. Louis underground hip-hop scene, starring Tef Poe and DJ Champ as the leading men.

Tonight: Family Affair Record Release Party at Club Viva

Mr.jpg
Family Affair's Mr. Rep
It's been awhile since we've written about Family Affair (other than adding their name to the nominees for Best Hip-hop Duo in the RFT music awards) but twin brothers Mr. Rep and Q.B. The Classic have a new album coming out tonight that could quite possibly reinvent the definition of an "EP."

The duo debuts The Family Blessing EP tonight at Club Viva, with a listening and release party.

Of course, it's not just any regular quick and easy EP: the record includes 16 songs.

"It started off at 5 or 7 tracks," explains Q.B. "Then we went recording and got 50 tracks. We narrowed it down to 20 and then 13 and now it's back up to 16."

According to Wikipedia, EP is short for "Extended Play" and the term dates back to 7-inch vinyl records that debuted in the 1940's. Today, generally speaking, any record with four or fewer tracks or between 8 and 30 minutes long, qualifies as an EP. The entry lists a few anomalies, such as Marilyn Manson's 54-minute Smells Like Children EP, and Relient K's 74-minute The Bird and the Bee Sides EP.

Asked about their 16-track monster stacks up, QB laughs and says, "It was an EP at first and then it turned into an album-type thing. I guess it's a new-style EP."

Doors at the club open at 9 p.m., the cover is $5, and ladies get in free until 11 p.m.

Scripts 'N Screwz: Hardest Working Men In St. Louis Hip-Hop?

East St. Louis' finest (and perhaps only) underground hip-hop duo, Scripts 'N Screwz, will take the stage tonight at SIUE's Morris University Center but the performance is barely a blip on the radar in comparison to all the moves the pair has been making lately.

To recap just a few of the multi-talented crew's latest and greatest exploits:
  • A new mixtape, Sound Cinema, that dropped last week, and is available for free download over on their blog.
  • The upcoming premiere  of Borrowed Time (July 16), the second episode of The Color of Justice, a documentary film series about Reggie Clemons, a death-row inmate who may have been wrongfully imprisoned. The pair co-produced and directed the film with stellar local director Ronnell "Falaq" Bennett, and contributed to the soundtrack.
  • Pre-production on a Purple Rain-style, full-length, hip-hop film called The Hunger, which stars the duo and is loosely based on the career of famed local group Bits 'N Pieces.
  • A no-holds-barred marketing campaign for their album The New Noise, which originally dropped last April but has only recently started to get some love from the blogosphere.
  • And finally, the release of this kick-ass video for their single from New Noise, "Big City Lights."

I caught up with the pair last night at Skybox on the Landing to find out if they ever sleep -- and get the details on a few of the aforementioned projects. A few choice quotes are after the jump.

Tonight! Stone-Zelenka-Ota Free Improv Orchestra at the Way Out Club

A big band doing free improvisation is a rare occurrence in St. Louis, so it's worth making note of tonight's gig by the fifteen-member Stone-Zelenka-Ota Free Improv Orchestra at the Way Out Club.

Jay Zelenka, who also runs Freedonia Music, and Dave Stone organized the show to celebrate a visit this week by Takanori Ota, a graduate of Webster University's music program who now lives back in his native Japan.

DJ Needles and Black Spade Swap Beats For Brushes at Art Show Tonight

Tonight at the Fort Gondo gallery on Cherokee Street, two of St. Louis' finest hip-hop artists will debut as artists -- period.

James "DJ Needles" Gates and rapper/producer Black Spade, who claims his real name is Veto Money, will be part of a collaborative street art-inspired exhibition called Fresh Paint

Also contributing works are Kevin McCoy, the event's organizer and a teacher at the St. Louis Craft Alliance, Shadzilla, a local graphic designer, and Brooklyn, a graffiti artist from -- you guessed it -- New York.

If the art is anywhere near as kick ass as the flyers these cats have been wheat-pasting around town, it ought to be something to see.

Tok plays MS benefit at Fubar tonight, sends gifts to the RFT

Philanthropy and rock & roll go hand-in-hand tonight during the "Rock Out for MS" show at Fubar (3108 Locust Street). Local acts Soma, the Sudden Passion, Lydia Loveless and Tok will perform, and the show begins at 7 p.m. We reviewed Tok's latest LP Long Tall Cobra Box a few weeks ago and had this to say:

As co-leaders of Tok, brothers Bryan and Matt Basler revel in thick, hazy riffs of stoner rock, which they layer over an articulated but unrepentant rhythm section. Parts of the album sound like a sampler disc of Sub Pop Records' early-'90s roster. Opener "Got No Need" has all the crunch, speed and bravado of Bleach-era Nirvana, while elsewhere the twisted twang ofthe Supersuckers and the super-fuzz of Mudhoney pop up.

As a thank-you for the write-up, Matt Basler sent a nice handwritten note to the RFT's offices - along with a decorated railroad spike. Observe (and click for a bigger shot):

I'm just glad it was a positive review, or that railroad spike could have ended up somewhere else.

Tonight, Tonight: Shows Around Town, Thursday, January 8

Although it's a cold, cold Thursday in early January, there's certainly a ton going on tonight around town. I'll report back from Girl Talk's sold-out Pageant show tomorrow (hopefully it won't involve things like this), and we'll have photos from the Lil Wayne et al show at the Chaifetz Arena on the blog as well. (I expect it'll look something like this.) But there's plenty more to do -- a partial list is below. If we missed something, chime in.

*Yourself and the Air/Commichung (who are returning after a hiatus of sorts)/Corvidae, Bluebird
*Ohtis, The Gramophone
*Nerve Parade, Mangia
*Those Darlins, Off Broadway
*The Bad Plus, Jazz at the Bistro
*Lil Wayne/Keri Hilson/T-Pain/Keyshia Cole/Gym Class Heroes, Chaifetz Arena
