Henry Townsend, 1909-2006
Henry Townsend, often called the patriarch of the St. Louis blues and the recipient of a National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, died Sunday, September 24 of pulmonary edema. He was 96 years old.

Townsend died in Grafton, Wisconsin, where he was slated to perform as the main attraction at the Inaugural Paramount Blues Festival.

Because we're publishing our annual "Best of St. Louis" issue this week, a longer appreciation of Townsend's life and career will appear in the paper's October 5 issue. [Editor's note: The story can be found here.]

The visitation/wake is scheduled for this Sunday, October 1, from noon till 7 p.m. at Layne Renaissance Chapel (7302 West Florissant Avenue, Jennings).
