Danforth Giggles

Categories: News

Former U.S. senator and most influential St. Louisian John Danforth was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night to shill his recent book, Faith and Politics, and he proved once and for all that what he lacks in side-splitting comic timing he more than makes up for in rational, centrist dialogue. It's hard to fathom that he stands beneath the same umbrella as President Bush.

Other than seeming a tad nervous and giggly (was it just me or did his demeanor suggest that he was perpetually on the verge of launching a huge burp?), Danforth continued his attack on the religious right and the Republican Party's pandering to it. "I don't think it's good for America," he explained. "For politicians, they think that the idea now is not to appeal to the center of American politics, but to get the true believers, energize the base -- and Democrats do this as well as Republicans. But for Republicans it's appealing to conservative Christians."

Perhaps not surprisingly, Faith and Politcs has getting mixed reviews.
