Jay-Z, Fur Sure
'Twas determined that the trim on the "hunter" style jackets comes from raccoon dogs, Europe- and Asia-dwelling members of the canid family that have little in common with the domestic dog. It looks like a giant raccoon.
Humane Society spokeswoman Kristin Leppert says she suspects other "faux" jackets in the Rocawear line also contain raccoon dog fur, which she says is obtained by skinning the animals alive. (See the Humane Society's graphic video of the process here.)
A spokesman from Macy's, which carries the Rocawear brand, says none of the company's St. Louis stores ever carried the faux fur jackets. In December Macy's stopped selling a jacket from Diddy's Sean John line, also advertised as faux but determined by the Humane Society to contain raccoon dog hair.
Rocawear appears to have stopped selling the "hunter" jacket on its Web site. A quick scan of the site shows some "faux fur" coats that remain for sale, including the women's "Logo Printed Faux Fur Snorkle."
The jacket trim's material, according to the site? "100% real fur."
