Wow — Unreal had no idea that a Catholic baptism was permanent until we heard this feature story produced by PRI’s The World and broadcast by KWMU (90.7 FM).
The Italian Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics, which tries to keep the Vatican out of Italian civil affairs, specializes in helping people get “debaptized.” The group posts a form letter for the “formal act of defection from the Catholic Church” on its Web site.
You can leave the Church, Vatican officials say, but it won’t leave you.
The whole thing reminded Unreal of a similar complaint that comedian David Cross has voiced about Judaism.
Well, Cross has a little something for Catholics too. Word is that Cross nearly cleared the room when he told his joke about being raped by the Virgin Mary a few years ago in a "welcome back students" performance at Saint Louis University.
