Battle of the Beats Update: Another Shooting
For the third weekend in a row, there has been a shooting at a St. Louis-area hip-hop nightclub. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that a nineteen-year-old male was shot to death early this morning outside of East St. Louis' Page 10 Lounge. (Details here.)
The Page 10 will likely face sanctions from the city of East St. Louis. After the shooting at Club Onyx, that club had its license revoked by ESL mayor Alvin Parks, who also serves as the town's liquor commissioner. A spokesman for the city says that establishments with liquor licenses are now being "held to a higher standard."
I've never been to the Page 10 Lounge, but it has been described to me as a hole-in-the-wall type of place that holds about a hundred people. At 1318 North Ninth St., a few blocks from the junction of I-55/70 and I-64, it's located in a cluster of three or four other similar lounges and down the street from the large night spot Club Rio.
A story about the Page 10 shooting in today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that in 1999 one of the club's security guards was shot to death just outside the entrance.
Update [posted 11:45 a.m. 9/11/07]: The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the Page 10 Lounge has, in fact, had its business license revoked by the city of East St. Louis. The paper also lists the victim as Rodney Nesbit, age nineteen, of East St. Louis.
