Eighteen to be Laid Off Today at Post-Dispatch

Only a month after the St. Louis Post-Dispatch laid off eighteen staffers, another eighteen heads are said to be on the chopping block today.

A source tells Riverfront Times that both St. Louis Newspaper Guild (union) members and management will be affected.

The P-D’s executive editor, Arnie Robbins, told RFT earlier this month that he couldn't promise more lay-offs wouldn’t come down the pipe. The Post's parent company, Lee Enterprises, is profitable but wants to cut costs.

Lee and the Guild, meanwhile, on September 15 began an early round of bargaining on the union contract. It doesn’t expire until June 2009, but the union would love to seal a deal early in the hopes of stemming future layoffs and outsourcing.

In other recent developments, local car dealer Dave Sinclair has pulled advertising worth between $25,000 and $30,000 from the paper because it has begun outsourcing some of its typesetting jobs.

More when we have it.
