Mizzou: You're so Gay

Categories: Community, News
Not that there is anything wrong with that! Out Traveler, the tourist guide with a queer eye, recently ranked Columbia as No. 8 in its listing of the ten most gay-friendly college towns in the central United States.

The magazine noted that despite the 2004 murder of gay activist Jesse James Valencia, Columbia has one of the most bustling same-sex communities in Missouri. Meanwhile, the university's LGBT Resource Center is one of the busiest in the country.

Lawrence, Kansas -- home of "Gay U" err KU -- beat out rival Columbia with a seventh-place ranking. No word on how Moline, Illinois ranked in the contest.

Here's the full list of the Top Ten.

Austin, Texas
Columbus, Ohio
Madison, Wisconsin
Iowa City, Iowa
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Bloomington, Indiana
Lawrence, Kansas
Columbia, Missouri
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
Lincoln, Nebraska

I know this is an old link, but as a gay-friendly straight person who had her awareness raised for the first time as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska, I am proud to see Lincoln on this list! Also proud to see my graduate alma mater, the University of Texas, in the top spot.
