Wash U. Med School is the Funnest Place in St. Louis!

When Unreal was a high-school junior, we went on a college visit and stayed with our friend’s older sister, whom we considered one of the awesomest people we knew. Our friend’s sister was pre-med. So was her roommate. That year, they were both taking organic chemistry. They had a lot of formulas and structures to memorize. So they painted all their orgo diagrams on the walls of their room. They were trying to prove it was indeed possible to learn through osmosis.

They’d also painted a lovely mural of a unicorn frolicking in a wooded glade, but Unreal still found the experience of sleeping in that room distinctly unsettling. This did not detract in any way from our opinion of our friend’s sister’s awesomeness, but it made us decide then and there that the life of a medical student was not for us. Medical school was no fun!

But, according to Slate, that perception is completely untrue. Medical school is totally fun. Or at least medical students have an amazing capacity to convert their misery into something that sort of resembles fun. This is a longstanding tradition in medical schools, but only recently have the medical students begun videotaping their antics and putting them up on YouTube for all to see.

According to the article, the med students at our very own Washington University are particularly adept at YouTube fun. Herewith some of their finer efforts, including the adventures of "Specky the Speculum" and a whole new takes on The Real World and Budweiser’s "Real Men of Genius" ad campaign:

Unreal is feeling kind of blue now. We should have painted orgo formulas on our wall, too. Then we would have had four years of fun (as opposed to just the one we had in journalism school.)
