Beacon Brings Home the Bacon -- With $90k Grant

While the owner of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reels from financial distress, an online start-up staffed with former scribes from the local daily has just received one of the most prestigious fellowships that the journalism field has to offer.

The St. Louis Beacon announced today that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has endowed it with a $90,000 grant.

Beacon associate editor Bob Duffy says the money will be used to add to the online paper's staff of eleven and expand its local coverage.

A nonprofit news outlet, the Beacon is one of four such start-ups to receive the Knight grant. The others -- VoiceofSanDiego.org, MinnPost and Chi-Town Daily News -- all were featured, along with the Beacon, in a recent New York Times piece chronicling the proliferation of such alternative news sites across the country.
