Warrior Poet: Michael O'Brian
Michael O'Brian was honored last night as St. Louis' "Poet Warrior" for 2008. A regular on the local open-mic scene, O'Brian was instrumental in luring the National Poetry Slam to St. Louis in 2004.
In front of a crowd of well-wishers at Duff's Restaurant, O'Brian recalled his first bleak days in St. Louis, arriving in 1990 with just $400 bucks to his name and spending several weeks sleeping in an old Ford LTD with his cat, Buster. He's come a long way since.
Below, O'Brian performs his poem "Verbs and To Be's." You can watch O'Brian recite his poem "Word Jazz" after the jump.
