How Many Post-Dispatch Writers Does it Take to Re-Report a Story?

monkey-typing.jpgLast week we mentioned the great investigative piece in the Belleville News Democrat that called into question curious payments at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in East St. Louis.

As the BND outlined in its Jan. 11 cover story, the charitable foundation founded by Olympic track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee paid $457,000 in recent years to her husband's private foundation, which failed to file federal income statements as required by law. Meanwhile, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation was losing millions and its East St. Louis youth center struggling to pay its bills, according the BND's examination of financial records.

This Sunday -- January 18 -- the Post-Dispatch ran an almost identical story on the front of the Metro section. The only new nugget was that Jackie Joyner-Kersee was canceling a fundraiser scheduled for next month that was to be hosted by Bob Costas.

But what struck me most about the P-D article was not this latest wrinkle. It was that the story carried three bylines at the top plus another contributor byline at the end of the story. Four reporters to cover a story that's already been reported? Amazing.
