John Updike passed away today from lung cancer. Updike wrote more than 50 books in his career and won countless literary awards, including two Pulitzers for his novels "Rabbit Is Rich" and "Rabbit at Rest."

Updike's latest novel revisited his popular 1984 book "Witches of Eastwick" that was turned into a film starring Jack Nicholson, Cher and Susan Sarandon. In "The Widows of Eastwick," published in October 2008, Updike imagined the three witches now as widows revisiting the town.

The Associated Press has an in-depth obit here.
