Renegade Alderman John Hoffmann Files for Mayor of Town & Country

hoffmann.jpgRead it here first: Town & Country alderman John Hoffmann filed paper's today to run for mayor in April's municipal election.

Hoffmann, the subject of an RFT cover story last October, has made quite a name for himself since first winning election as an alderman last April. He, of course, has Unreal's full endorsement for mayor.

In nine months in office Hoffmann has cracked down on retired drug dealers living in Town & Country, argued openly with Mayor Jon Dalton, supported deer-hunting in the ritzy suburb and proposed an ordinance banning cell phone use while driving.

Hoffmann drafted the cell phone bill last summer shortly after a tractor-trailer rammed through stopped traffic on Highway 40 in Town & Country, killing three people and injuring more than a dozen more.

Other aldermen rejected his proposal as reactive with no proof that the truck driver was using a cell phone at the time of the crash. Turns out Hoffmann was right. The Post-Dispatch reports today that the driver admitted so much to investigators.

Hoffmann tells Unreal that he's filing so that someone opposes Dalton in the April 7 mayoral contest. "When it began to be clear no one would file, I did," says Hoffmann. "I feel the citizens of Town & Country should have an option to vote for someone for mayor other than a full time lobbyist."

Dalton, an attorney with a downtown law firm, has been registered with the state as a lobbyist in the past, but he says it's only because several of his clients, including a cigarette manufacturer, are state-regulated businesses.
