Local Democratic Operative Indicted for Weapon Charges, Mortgage Fraud

dojseal.jpg
It's been a rough year for Milton "Skip" Ohlsen III. A year ago I wrote how the Democratic operative and owner of St. Louis political consulting firm Global Management Solutions had gotten into hot water with his creditors.

At the time, Ohlsen was masquerading as an ultimate-fighting promoter with a production company called Genesis MMA. (That's MMA as in "mixed martial arts".) After staging a few somewhat successful fights in 2007, Genesis MMA went belly-up last year leaving investors, creditors and employees complaining that Ohlsen owned them thousands of dollars.

Ohlsen later reappeared in March 2008, when my colleague Kristen Hinman wrote that he had become involved in the now-defunct cocaine factory/restaurant called Red in downtown St. Louis.

In more recent news, last month federal prosecutors indicted Ohlsen after busting him with firearms on three separate occasions beginning in December 2007. Ohlsen carries a previous felony conviction for drug trafficking that prohibits him from owning firearms, but that hasn't stopped him from compiling a near Tony Montana display of weaponry.

Among the weapons found recently in Ohlsen's arsenal was a European American semi-automatic pistol, a Walther PPK/S semi-automatic pistol, another Walther .22 pistol, a .40 caliber Glock and 550 rounds of ammunition.

Then this month, federal prosecutors one-upped the weapons charges when they issued a second indictment against Ohlsen for mortgage fraud. According to a Department of Justice press release yesterday, Ohlsen stated on his loan applications that his income was $15,000 a month when "in fact it was substantially less."

"This type of fraud has contributed to the national mortgage crisis," said U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway in the statement. Ohlsen could face 30 years in prison and $1 million in fines if convicted.

I'm now told that there may be even more to the Ohlsen story. I'll keep you posted on what I uncover.
