Security Cameras Go Up in U. City Following Muggings

The Washington University police department has installed closed-circuit television cameras on Ackert Walkway (a.k.a. Greenway Walk) in an attempt to beef up security following several recent assaults near the University City Loop.

The university's Student Life newspaper reports today that the school is also planning to install cameras on the stretch of Melville Avenue between Kingsbury Boulevard and Washington Avenue. The paper first reported last month that the school and University City were discussing ways to increase security near the Loop

"We hope that the installation of this security system will discourage crime along the Greenway Walk and lead to a safer environment for all in the campus community living in and visiting University City," Justin Carroll, dean of students, tells the Stud Life today.

The paper reports that a female was mugged by four subjects last October near the Greenway Apartments. Last month, four subjects also attacked and mugged a graduate student on Melville Avenue.
