State Officials Think Libertarians Want To Kill Police

Missouri's Libertarian Party got all hot and bothered this week upon learning that Missouri law enforcement considers its members to be part of the "modern militia."

Missouri Libertarians don't want to get mixed up with this crowd.
A February memo circulated among law enforcement agencies (and issued by Governor Jay Nixon, Department of Public Safety Director John Britt, Missouri State Highway Patrol Colonel James Keathley and Missouri Information Analysis Center Director Van Godsey) lumps Libertarians in with skinheads and other "New World Order" conspiracy theorists who believe:
  • the U.S. government is going to collapse
  • martial law will be imposed
  • President Barack Obama plans to take away  everybody's guns.
Really.

"Militia members most commonly associate with 3rd party political groups," reads the memo. "It is not uncommon for militia members to display Constitutional Party, Campaign for Liberty, or Libertarian material. These members are usually supporters of former Presidential Candidate [sic]: Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin and Bob Barr."

Read the memo after the jump.

Memo pages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

The memo was apparently leaked by an unnamed Missouri police officer to the uber-right wing syndicated radio talk-show host Alex Jones last Friday. (Listen to a clip here.)

That's when Missouri Libertarian Party spokesman Mike Ferguson got wind of it. "The ignorance of this would be funny if it were not so dangerous," gripes Ferguson in an e-mail to me. "Look at page three -- see how a gun/Second Amendment voter is casually lumped in the same paragraph as a white nationalist....

"This document does, to its credit, deal with some people who are dangerous," Ferguson goes on. "Lumping those who simply have dissenting political opinions in with the truly dangerous not only flies in the face of personal freedom, it weakens efforts to stop real threats to society and government.

"I do want the nutcases stopped -- but I should not be labeled a potential danger because I supported a Libertarian candidate (and actually was an LP candidate in 2004)."

Ferguson tells me he has requested meetings with the authors/issuers of the memo but has so far either been turned down or ignored.
