Photos: A Bunch of People Are Against a Bunch of Stuff at Tea Party
Two things were clear, though. This tea party was a lot bigger than the one in February under the Arch. And everyone was angry about something. (Except perhaps the guy below who just wanted us to pray for America.)
Check out more photos of the tea baggers and their signs here.

Clowns. Every last one of 'em.
Give it a rest. A few wealthy Military-industrial complex aristocrats tell you to get riled up and make a mockery of the Boston Tea Party and you fools not only do it, but you do with no direction, no single purpose and no goals.

Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 15 2009 @ 11:45PMEvery last person there was a clown, eh?
Quite a "deep" perspective coming from a person who has built their entire context based upon a few brief and extremely biased comments from the author, Nick Lucchesi. Of course, any intelligent reader has always known that the Riverfront Times is one of the last places one will go for an unbiased treatment of any political issue.
Also, predictably, you base your argument on a false premise. No "wealthy military-industrial complex aristocrats" told me to get all "riled up" and show up to this protest. Instead, I actively sought out information about this gathering. After finding out the details, I worked to spread the word to others.
I suppose that makes ME a wealthy military-industrial complex aristocrat as well?
Ultimately, this article written by Mr. Lucchesi is a gross misrepresentation at best, and an outright lie at worst. There was a common theme at this event, which focused on the dangers of a government that has grown entirely too large and out of touch with the citizen, through excessive taxation and trillions of dollars in bailouts chauffeured via 1,000+ page bills that were never even read before they were signed.
Of course, such objectivity and fairness in reporting should never be expected by an outfit like the Riverfront Times. Similarly, I'm not surprised that an open debate about the issues is not within the intellectual capabilities of the lead story's author (let alone the poster "Nay Sayer"). It's much easier to insult those with whom you believe through the power of the press - accuracy be damned.
Lastly, your depiction of the "homemade signs" and "sandwich boards" as being the main form of signage is completely inaccurate. Further, your carefully chosen images in the slideshow looked more like a community college freshman's visual arts midterm submission rather than anything close to resembling true and accurate reporting. As a direct challenge to your woefully biased account, I will gladly supply you with images that depict a far different scene. Which, incidentally, vastly outnumbered the types of signs that obviously did not meet the exacting standards of quality that your free newspaper demands.
I think it's only fair to point out the most egregious case of inaccurate reporting. In fact, this case went beyond inaccurate and qualifies as a complete and total lie.
"Cigars were prevalent at the Plaza on Wednesday."
Wrong. After taking a significant amount of video and pictures, including several trips around the plaza, I saw absolutely nobody smoking cigars. Leave it to a reporter with a clear agenda to find this guy.
You simply took one case out of the 7,000 in attendance and used it as a self-serving caricature. Honestly - do you still cling to the worn out 1920's image of the fat cat smoking his cigar as representing conservative ideals?
For being so edgy and current, I'm shocked at how out of touch the Riverfront Times has become. For being such a purported champion of challenging authority and questioning our leaders, it's amazing at how quickly the Riverfront Times has completely sold out to the "man."
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 12:16AMWOW!
Seems like you missed the event...or just skimmed the outskirts! Next time put down your attitude, really talk to people and you might just learn something about our concerns. We might have different opinions than you and your paper, but we won't bite! as for a little insight to a few things that make me angry...Government that takes away my rights while it spending my kid's future, and yours too I might add, into the toilet and so called "reporters" who have no idea how to present a story without their biased opinions clouding reality!
Those of us who attended know the truth!
It's highly likely that Nick Lucchesi lives in his parents basement and spends his days smoking weed. Teabagging? really? That's the best you got? Bet you know ALOT about teabagging. Probably real popular in the back room at parties, aren't you.
It must be difficult to live your meaningless life everyday, Nick. It's obvious you don't understand why thousands of us would protest a suffocating government that seeks to relieve the American people of it's hard earned cash and liberties. You've probably not had an ounce of responsibility in your THC saturated life.
The River Faux Times is great for the dog to pee on. Very absorbant.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 1:00AM"tough for an outside observer to find any sort of discernible, unifying cause" ??
I'll help you out: Stop the out-of-control taxes and government spending, and return to the Constitutional principles that made this country great.
People are angry at the amount of power a few people in Washington are weilding over our lives. This is supposed to be the "land of the free." The message was very clear to 99.9% of people in attendance. The speakers also made it clear. It was repeated over and over. You either weren't there, weren't listening or perhaps, slightly biased??
Also, the comments on the sign slideshow are very telling. If I had any doubt that RFT is not true journalism, but merely a place to spout liberal idealogy, I am very, very sure of it now. Why are you so afraid to cover a story with opposing viewpoints honestly?
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 5:46AMNick- Maybe reporting and journalism isn't for you!! You may want to consider changing careers. The BIGGEST message you should have taking from the STL Tea Party is that WE the people will no longer be complacent when it comes to irresponsiblity in our government: from bailing-out Wall Street, to trillion of dollars in new spending, and a national debt that will take the next 20 years to pay, and INCREASED HIDDEN TAXES. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that AMERICANS are fed-up with our elected officials, and we have the power to do something about it. They will either step up, or be shipped out. Maybe the same should apply to your poor journalism skills. Going smoke another one.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 7:51AMI went to see the gathering of the douchebags. I'm curious as to where the outrage was during the last administration. (Government growth of over 40%, undocumented Federal spending, erosion of personal rights.) I don't really care though, all protestors are strokes. No one likes taxes and from what I witnessed overweight white people REALLY hate paying taxes.
Did they pay a sales tax on the tea bags they bought?
Dooh!
At least we have Nazis to watch this weekend. These guys will be real smart. Nazis are gay.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 7:56AMWow, I don't know why....but it still suprises me when media outlets show clear cut bias and allow their tunnel vision to tarnish reality. We are protest in a NON PARTISAN MANNER!! Can you not pull your heads out of your Liberal Hindquarters long enough to realize that we are fighting for All of America? We're not fighting for the Rich, the Religious, the Conservatives, the Pro Lifers.....We're fighting for EVERYONE...even you who bash us.
Washington is abusing us...That's the theme...A first grader can understand that. Most of us don't like how the Bush Administration handled things either. We're tired of out of control taxation, extreme Government Spending, politicians who trample the Constitution and remain unaccountable, and a push toward Socialism.
We want to keep what we earn; not be forced to give our money to those who refuse to participate in society. We don't want Billions of our Tax dollars going to 3rd world countries to prop them up. We don't want Billions being spent to help Illegal Immigrants soak up welfare and sent U.S. dollars to back to Mexico. We want TERM LIMITS. We want Congress to reduce the time they are in session to reduce frivolous legislation. We want them to READ the Bills they are voting on. We want Legislative Enumeration citing Constitutional Authority. We want Washington to take care of our MILITARY rather than coddling Career Politicians. We want our Politicians to pay the Taxes that they force us to pay and be held accountable when they don't.
HOW IS ANY OF THIS PARTISAN? HOW AS AN AMERICAN CAN YOU NOT SUPPORT THIS MOVEMENT?
It is truly shameful how so many journalists are missing the point.
btw...I sure didn't see the plaza trashed with litter after we got done last night...
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 8:10AMGod I'm loling so hard at these comments. Keep them coming, crazy people!
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 9:01AMActually, keep the personal attacks coming Dean and County Joe!
I'm well-spoken, informed, educated, and (since it matters to Joe) a fit 6'3" 215 lbs. Oh and I'm white too, since that matters to people like Joe.
In case you missed what really happened yesterday (and if you've only read accounts from the RFT and Post Dispatch, you did miss what happened), the focus of our displeasure was NOT purely on the Obama administration. Sure, there were a couple of anti-Obama signs. This may come as a shock to you, but the exception is NOT rule, unless you need it as a premise to fuel an invalid argument.
The vast majority of the hundreds of thousands of protesters are pissed at Obama, Bush, and the rest of the out-of-touch members in BOTH parties of congress who have continued to spend increasingly large amounts of our money.
We see that as a problem. Obviously, you don't. If you are able, I challenge you to debate the issue rather than stooping to personal attacks.
Of course, if you want to play internet tough guy we can start a discussion about how your world view has obviously been refined through the smoky lens of THC, pachuli, and too many hour-long Grateful Dead guitar solos. Don't forget to rage against the machine ... as long as that machine is the conservative one. You wouldn't want to rage against the current liberal-socialistic machine now, would you?
That just wouldn't be "cool".
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 12:45PMWinston = douche.
I hate conservatives and liberals equally. You are all a bunch of freaks with too much time on your hands.
BTW - 6'3" 215lbs is pretty a little chunky, you may want to hit the gym and drop 10 or so.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 2:37PMLook, you folks have to learn to laugh at yourself a little. Yeesh, you'd never expect such vitriol from people who created hilarious signs and stuck tea bags to their hats. Have a great weekend!
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 3:17PMCounty Joe = That Gross Stuff Douches Rinse Out.
BTW - Muscle weighs more than fat dumbass. I guess in your narrow mind all 215 lbs of body weight is the same. But then again, you're probably a big fan of "Make Me a Supermodel" and tooooo-tally freak out if you can't squeeze into your She-male Size 4 DnG low cut jeans. Maybe that's why you're obsessed with douching? I didn't know that was part of your metrosexual daily regiment.
I must admit it is curiously entertaining that you lump conservatives and liberals equally - and admirable that you hate them with similar ferocity. Obviously you are superior to all you survey, and we could all learn a lot if we only took the time to listen to your words of wisdom.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 16 2009 @ 4:27PMI almost forgot to compliment you on your searing political commentary:
"Nazis are gay."
Sounds a little insensitive to homosexuals though, don't you think? That's really not the kind of open-mindedness the RFT community appreciates.
I guess if someone is an overweight white homosexual freak who doesn't like paying taxes and has too much time on their hands, they better douche themselves and run for the gym if they see you "observing" at a protest.
But they can't say they weren't warned!
