June is turning out to be a big month for gadget geeks. Last week Palm finally released its much anticipated new phone, the Pre which looks a lot like an iPhone with a slide out keyboard. It's no surprise, some of the same engineers who designed the first iPhone also worked on the Pre. Right now it's only available on the Sprint network but it's been rumored that Verizon will also carry the handset in six months. Is the Pre an iPhone killer? Time will tell. It will at least be a good contender in the smart phone market and maybe even bring Palm back from the brink of irrelevancy. I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. If I do, I'll let you know. But here is a good video demo of the phone:
Now that brings us to the other big phone announcement this month. One that might have already been made by the time you read this. It's been widely rumored that Apple will announce new iPhone hardware to coincide with the iPhone 3.0 operating system Apple promised this month. We know what the new OS promises because Apple demoed a lot of the new features already a few months ago, but the new iPhone handset is just a rumor at the time of this writing.
Apple very rarely pre-announces these releases without a big press event, but there has been enough buzz and leaks in the blogosphere that it would seem very likely that we'll see a new iPhone announced this week. And if the rumors are correct we'll be seeing a thirty-two gigabyte model, a better camera with autofocus, video recording and editing capabilities, a flat matte finish and a ton of other things. But given the frenzy of rumors flying right now, I only expect about half of them to be true.
The other big Apple rumor right now, is that Steve Jobs will make his return to Apple as CEO after taking an extended medical leave since December.
