In her June newsletter, Rep. Cynthia Davis, a St. Charles County Republican, offers some rather provocative commentary on child hunger. In fact, she says, there are actually hidden benefits to a child going hungry. Who would have thought?

"Hunger can be a positive motivator," writes Davis, who chairs the Missouri House Special Committee on Children and Families. "What is wrong with the idea of getting a job so you can get better meals? Tip: If you work at McDonald's, they will feed you for free during your breaks."

In questioning the need for a summer food program to serve thousands of low-income Missouri children, Davis goes on: "Bigger governmental programs take away your connectedness to the human family, our brotherhood and our need for one another...It really is all about increasing government spending, which means an increase in taxes to buy more free lunches and breakfasts.:

For this, Davis earned the wrath of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who last evening named her "World's Worst Person." Continue on to see Olbermann's tongue-lashing.

P.S. A recent report by Feeding America found that one in five Missouri children lives with hunger.

P.P.S. Davis, of O'Fallon, was elected to the House in 2002 and is currently serving a third term. She has seven children: John, Benjamin, Cathryn, Matthew, Amanda, Susanna and Philip. None of whom, one hopes, went to bed hungry last night.
