Major League Baseball just  announced the participants in its "Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game" to take place this Sunday, July 12.

As my colleague Keegan Hamilton opined, the last time a roster this motley was assembled had to have been 1977 Yankees. (And let's hope this team doesn't precipitate rioting, a serial killer, and a disco craze.)

Among the hometown celebrities taking the field are rappers Nelly and Chingy, The Office actress Jenna Fisher, Mad Men's Jon Hamm and Nascar racer Carl Edwards. Other celebrities to suit up are singer Ashanti, Tonight Show sidekick Andy Richter, actor Billy Bob Thorton and basketball coach Bobby Knight.

Meanwhile, the MLB "legends" include Cardinals hall-of-famers Ozzie Smith and Bruce Sutter plus Dave Winfield, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, Ernie Banks, and famed surgery guinea pig Tommy John. Former Cardinals Lee Smith, Vince Coleman and Whitey Herzog will also participate.

Aside from the rag-tag lineup, what strikes me most odd about the softball game is its locale. The game is being held inside Busch Stadium and not right next door on the Field of Schemes, err, Field of Dreams softball field the Cardinals built in place of Ballpark Village.
