Former Globe-Democrat and Post-Dispatch society columnist Jerry Berger plans to return to his craft this month.

Since stepping down from the Post in 2004, Berger has been a virtual no-see-um, but those days are over writes the columnist on his new website Berger's Beat:

"After a five-year hiatus and many hours of Lawrence Welk re-runs, Captain and Tennille music and devouring pastrami at Protzel's, I found it necessary to return to columnizing."

The columns will appear online on Berger's site beginning August 31 and run every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Yesterday, I tried to secure an interview with Berger to discuss his foray into online journalism.

Alas, the columnist replied (via email) that throat surgery has left him without much of a voice so he didn't think an interview would work. He says he's also undergone lung surgery recently and the docs say he is cancer free.

When I suggested an email interview, Berger also demurred. "Let's hold up on it," he wrote.

Okay, playing hard to get. Suit yourself.

Though here's wishing the veteran columnist a triumphant return. In his heydays in the 1980s and 90s, no one in town dished the dirt on local celebrities, debutantes and ne'er-do-wells better than Berger -- and no one has taken his place ever since. Welcome back.
