Smoking Ban Supporters to Rally Prior to Tonight's County Council Meeting

• Apologies for signing twice in that last post. I've spent a long day trying to disabuse people of the notion that President Obama is "struggling" to avoid breaking his tax promise when of course he already shattered it to pieces with the 150% and 2,000% tax increases on smokers. - MJM

• OH, and I see Gene's friend Pete is here spreading similar misinformation. Actually Pete, ventilation systems have a VERY significant effect on smoke in the air, as anyone with half a brain and a window fan knows perfectly well. They cannot do the impossible however: If I am in a room with you there is no ventilation system in the world that can save me from breathing the noxious toxins your respiratory system excretes into the air: my air is fouled by your human metabolism and I am "poisoned" as some folks characterize such things. Of course for most normal people a decent fan or two works just fine, even without expensive ventilation systems. Tobacco smoke is not "Magickal." It does not have visible components that obey the laws of physics and magickal invisible components that can defy them... no matter how much Antismokers like to claim the contrary. This ban, like almost all generalized smoking bans is a social engineering trick, not a real public health need. And that's why they are always so absolutely and adamantly opposed to ANY solutions that might allow smokers and their friends comfortable indoor public places to gather and relax together. • As usual, Gene Borio of the well-funded Tobacco BBS comes out in favor of smoking bans, and as usual if you examine what he writes you'll find something a lot different than what most folks would feel is truth. ASHRAE has stated that it is impossible to absolutely guarantee a zero level of contact with smoke in a mixed room of smokers and nonsmokers, and that "cognizent authorities" have determined that Zero is the ONLY "safe level"... so therefore no health guarantees can be made. You'll note that ASHRAE has never been pressured by advocates into making a similar claim for any other substance on face of the planet: that tells you a lot about the money and the power behind these antismoking fanatics. You'll also find that, despite this pressure, ASHRAE has a section assuring us that a SEPARATELY VENTILATED ROOM for smoking is a perfectly fine alternative. Just a little something Gene left out. • Be careful of the fine print on the ballot. The tax exempt American Cancer Society paid for lawyers to remove Ohios exemptions AFTER they were voter approved. • An alternative to smoking bans It is clear that separation of smokers from non-smokers combined with air exchange technology is a complete solution to this largely artificial problem. All it takes is regulating authorities setting the standards for indoor air quality on passive smoke, and the technology does the rest. Such air quality standards are common in industrial and environmental contexts. But, to date, no country in the world has set them for smoking areas. It seems clear that the reasons are not scientific, nor are they economic or technical: they are political. As to the annoyance of smoking, a compromise between smokers and non-smokers can be reached, through setting a quality standard and the use of modern ventilation technology. Air ventilation can easily create a comfortable environment that removes not just passive smoke, but also and especially the potentially serious contaminants that are independent from smoking.
