• When I was a kid in middle school a bully 3 years my senior blindsided me in the back of the head with a thick textbook. I suffered a concussion and he went unpunished. When my father came home that night he saw me sick to my stomach as the headaches came and went. Finally his anger boiled over and he took me, concussion and all to the house of the kid (a neighbor 10 houses down) who did it. Knocking on the door he waited for his father to answer. Pushing past his father he grabbed him and dragged him out screaming, slamming his face against our car. I was still inside the car. My father, staring at this kid's dad the entire time, repeatedly slammed his son's head into the side of our Ford Aerostar until the window was a bloody mess. His father didn't scream or try to help him. He stood staring from his door holding his mother back as she screamed for my father to stop. Finally as my tormentor, sobbing through a broken bloodied face lay crumped over, my father opened the car door and told me to get out. My father asked if I had anything to say and I didn't utter a word. He asked if there was anything I'd like to do. And I nodded yes, with tears running down my face. With my left foot raised and a terrified 8th grader beneath it, I slowly rested my foot on his neck and told him "Next time I won't need my dad."
