Man Fatally Shoots Self While Teaching Girlfriend Lesson on Gun Safety
PRESS RELEASE
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office
P.O. Box 100 - Hillsboro, MO 63050
Oliver "Glenn" Boyer, Sheriff
www.jcsd.org
Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer reports that on 9-18-09, Sheriff's Deputies responded to 4307 Rock Valley Court in Imperial, Missouri for an accidental shooting.
According to the investigation, the victim James Looney, W/M, age 40, an Imperial resident, was teaching his girlfriend firearm safety.
According to the witness, James Looney would show the different safety mechanisms, put the gun to his head, and ask if the gun would go off. Looney apparently did this with two other weapons and varied safety mechanisms, before the last one went off.
Looney was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning. According to witnesses, Looney was going to take his girlfriend to the shooting range the next day, but insisted on firearm safety the day prior.

horrorfull, it's a terrible story! Guns must be forbidden!

Or such nuts should use some brain!
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 8:18AMUmmm, sounds to me like SHE blew his brains out and had this foolish story to cover it up. No gun owner would ever be so stupid as to put a loaded gun to their own head, unloaded or loaded as a "safety exercise".
I smell homicide
Brilliant, ban guns because Darwin is right. Glad he only hurt himself. Henry, guns are only effective weapons if you have one and no one else does, so why let the criminals rein supreme?
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 8:19AMRule 1: The gun is ALWAYS loaded.
Rule 2: Never aim a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
Henry cow, shut the fuck up. Just because someone is a dispshit doesn't mean we should outlaw guns. On the contrary, he just removed himself from our gene pool, killing off unnecessarily stupid genes that may have been passed on otherwise. It's a terrible story, but it's his own fault for being OUTRAGEOUSLY foolish.

@Henry cow
That's it run away in fear. Guns should be respected, not banned. Everyone should go through gun safety classes. They are dangerous in the wrong hands, but are a great weapon for defending you and your family against intruders, or those who wish you bodily harm. They also keep the government in check. Let's see a populace that has no way of defending themselves are pretty much slaves to the government. It happened in the past it will happen in the future. The human race hasn't "evolved" that much in the last 100 or so years.
"he must have worked for acorn"? seriously? retard
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 8:24AMRight... the gun is the horrible part of this story. It pointed itself at this man's head and then suddenly went off.
When will everyone learn that a firearm is really no different than any other power tool? My kid doesn't get into an argument with a friend and go grab my power saw from the garage to settle the score...
This guy clearly was an idiot. The number one safety mechanism is your finger OFF of the trigger. Accidents happen, but he should have accidentally killed a Webkinz or something, not himself.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 8:26AM@ people bashing Henry Cow : lol. No reason would ever justify banning guns for you people. Don't be so close-minded
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 8:27AM@EndUser:
you know that have ballistics tests that can determine if someone fired a gun or not - i'm sure they looked into the possibility of this being a cover story for a homicide. I'm also sure that they wouldn't have reported it as an accident if they weren't already sure.
Here's another opportunity for the gunnuts to come out and start the "guns don't kill people" chant that is so tired.

Also as a cop I'm sure its not homicide cause blood splatter and gsr would tell the tale plus it mentions witness'.
As for banning guns I have never caught a felon that intended harm with a legal registered gun!
You never know when you might need one ask the girl I saved from being kidnapped while I was off duty! An Illegal Mexican (yes from mexico) tried to pull her into an suv I heard her scream and turned to watch 7 yes 7 people staring at her doing nothing not even calling the police.
I called my department and got units enroute and then ran over gun drawn and forced the guy out by his ears and slammed him face first into his vehicle.
Turns out he was a stalker and planned to take her to mexico! Those that fear guns watched as she was almost ubducted the best part is when someone finally called the police it was to complain I had a gun!!!!!
All the pheasants ever bred, won't make up for one man dead.

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 9:49AMEducation seems to be the factor here. The failure in both he and some of the posters here, is indeed a lack of education. A firearm is a tool. It is indiscriminate and inert without it's wielder. A lack of responsibility or desire to educate yourself in the safe use of any tool ( especially one that is designed to kill ) can prove lethal. Don't place blame on something you fear simply because you are ignorant. Any primate can use a tool. Would you put a running chainsaw in the hands of an ape and let him loose in a day care? I think the efforts of some misguided. Without tools of any kind we are left in the dark and forced to cower in fear of those who posses them. I think it's time people pony up and take on the responsibility of safety themselves. Think for yourself and inspire others to do the same. Maybe in time we might be able to muster enough collective intelligence to not kill ourselves over something as trivial as "who's anthropomorphic personification has a bigger reproductive organ." In which most that desire the abolishment of firearms would be running to the gun store if such a conflict were to arise.

And Gentleman, let's not forget Katrina. What a wonderful taste of natural disaster that was. People looting, police not able to respond and help everyone, cause they were busy protecting their own families. You were pretty much left on your own to defend your property and loved ones. Like I said, people are sooo quick to advocate gun control and banning firearms till they actually need one. If you remember, it got so bad they had to call in Blackwater private security to keep the peace.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:00AMDr. Richard- you are in a firearms discussion. I believe you are looking for the narcissist chat room/discussion.
If you were educated, then you would know that you wouldn't have to throw around your accomplishments- a classic sign that you are lacking self confidence or esteem somewhere in your social skills (the most important "skills" needed in daily life).
I am guessing it's likely that you are added the "Dr" for added color. A PhD knows what words and common phrases mean. Your writing spells ignorance; thereby confirming my original statement about guns and education.
Most of the civilized world doesn't care how tough you are so leave the Rambo accomplishments out. A world renowned martial arts master is about as interesting as plumbing expert.
You didn't have to mention that you are from Texas- we all knew that. Explains why you are insecure and jealous of the "snooty" (smart) "northeast".

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:20AMso if we ban guns does that mean we can still have bows and arrows? what about knifes? for that matter if I really cared to couldnt I just set a guy on fire by dowsing him with gasoline and then throwing matches at him. Guess we better ban those as well. You know what else we really need to get rid of alcohol and automobiles because I mean those two combined are like guns and bullets. But hey heres an even better idea before we start banning all these things. How bout we just ban people altoghter that would totally solve all these problems. Lets make people get licensed before they have kids. you dont pass the license test you dont get to have a kid. thats a good idea. the problem with the world is we have children raising children and society has to keep making rules to govern all these ignorant children now if we lived in a world were the only people allowed to reproduce were mature stable adults who would in turn raise mature stable adults all these conversations would be moot. ALthough I do have to say if banning guns means that swords would come back in vogue as the premiere self-defense device I am totally all for it. I mean shooting a guy is effective im sure but there is something just so much more romantic about chopping a dude up with a samuria sword.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:27AMAmericans are fucking retards.
Well, most of them.
I think "Dr. Richard Wigginton" was used as a pun -- everything I have found in [search engines] comes up with stuff about a "martial arts expert".
I'm not sure if anyone else already clarified that, but thought I'd do it anyway.
I don't think banning guns solves anything, even with the laws in place to prevent them falling into the 'wrong hands' solves nothing (the wrong people have them anyway).
I agree that I too thought "I wonder if this chick shot her husband and is claiming that he did it while showing her gun safety"... but at the same time I am sure they already looked into investigating powder burns and other stuff (angle of bullet entry / path) and determined that it was self-inflicted.
"who is that stupid?" someone asked -- well, given the number of times I read stories like this one - many people are that stupid.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:34AMTo those of you who advocate gun control, you need to take a look at Great Britain. GB has ridiculously strict gun control laws. In GB you cannot even buy an airsoft gun legally. This is exactly what you want the U.S. to turn into.
Now go look at their per capita violent crime rates. The per capita crime rates in almost every single major city in GB are higher than in the United States. I'm sure though you will try to find a way to twist the facts. Thankfully the intelligent people who read this will be able to look up the numbers and do their own research to form an opinion that is not based on your unrealistic view of how gun control would work. As long as firearms are manufactured anywhere in the world the criminals will always have them. I'm sure not even you could believe that a criminal obtains their firearm legally and makes sure it is registered.
Try looking at things with a little common sense and doing some statistical research. GB is a great example of how gun control does not function.
I won't even go into any detail about the family member of mine who was mugged at gunpoint in London. Wow gun control functions exceptionally well doesn't it.
Think a little before you start pontificating about subjects that you are obviously not familiar with and have no basis in reality.
Oh and as for the idiot who said that a truly educated person does mention their credentials when speaking on a subject, where exactly did you go to school K-Mart university? One of the fundamental things you will learn at any major university is the need to back up statements with facts and that it is important to present credentials when speaking authoritatively on a subject.
I think it is you who may be the uneducated one or is not quite sure of himself otherwise why would you have attacked someone in such a childish manner when all they did was disagree with you?
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:40AMI find the comments about "Gun Ownership Advocates are Uneducated" both interesting and very upsetting.
I can't talk of statistics because I honestly don't know them, but the statement was "All" so a single educated gun ownership advocate disproves the theory.
I have both a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering with a minor in English
I have recieved a "Member, Group Technical Staff" election from my company (recognizes the top 15% of world wide technical talent in a company of roughly 26,000 employees)
I have volunteered at a local highschool Robotic's team for the past 7 years
I have written published technical articles, appears in technical pod casts and travel around the world providing customer training on technical design concepts for the company I work for.
I find it hard to believe any reasonable person would deem me "Uneducated" and I am a strong advocate of Gun Ownership rights and the right to self-defense.
In addition, a recent survey determined that Gun Owners have a higher than average per capita income than the general population (and thus non-gun owners) within the united states. While there is some debate on the meaning of that result, it would certainly suggest that gun owners aren't the "ignorant, uneducated, unwashed masses" as some would like to paint us.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:41AMI'm with the good Dr. Wigginton. It's a choice. "Guns should be banned!!!", "Everyone should have guns!!!". WAH, get a life. Make your choice and DON'T force it down my throat. I have completed gun safety classes, shot at targets. shot at animals, and thankfully have not had to shoot another person. I choose not to have a gun in my home, I don't want that risk for my son. I will teach him when he gets older, but that's for another time.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:41AMSeen stupid stuff like this before. I went to a gun range and the guy I went with tried to teach us gun safety. Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 10:54AMThis is truly a tragedy. A human life was lost, one of thousands, if not tens of thousands that have and will be lost this year alone due to irresponsible use of firearms.
This is not a joke, in any sense of the word and it sickens me to see the same sentiments repeated over and over any time someone loses their life in a gun related incident.
Every time someone shoots themselves or someone else, accidentally or intentionally, there are always two bandwagons ready to move down the street to pick up all the activists itching and waiting for the next death so they can jump on and speak their mind.
I am sickened to read some of the comments on this post. What could have been a respectful discourse on actual solutions to a problem devolves into a pissing match over whether or not guns should exist or be allowed to be possessed.
There is something else that tens of thousands of people die from every year. It's called an automobile. The government compels all drivers to take extensive training courses on how to operate a vehicle safely. If you drive a vehicle larger than a standard truck or car, i.e. a limo, bus, or diesel, then you must exhibit training on the more advanced vehicle. Once trained, you are tested on this training and you receive a license confirming proficiency in how to operate the vehicle and knowledge of existing safety laws and requirements.
About a year ago, four teenagers were speeding down a canyon road, less than a quarter mile from my home. The road is wide, but has some very sharp curves. The driver lost control of the car as she approached the last curve and hit a utility pole with enough force to drive the pole a good distance into the car, effectively splitting it. If I remember correctly, she survived, but the passengers, her friends, did not.
Now there was a great deal of head shaking following this incident. I'm sure charges were pressed against this teenage girl and her life, irregardless of the outcome, is permanently scarred by this mistake and irresponsible action. The fact remains, though, that no one was crying out for the outlawing and destruction of automobiles and there never will be becuase: 1) The majority of citizens of America rely heavily on automobiles for transportation, and 2) The United States and local state governments have gone to great extent to ensure that licensed drivers have extensive, proven training to operate their vehicles responsibly.
The question I have is why are guns any different than automobiles? In the wrong hands, an automobile can be an extremely destructive, at the least, and lethal, at the worst, tool. Guns, as well, in the wrong hands can be extremely destructive and lethal.
The answer is not to eliminate guns altogether. I don't say that lightly either. My uncle committed suicide with a shotgun when I was 13 years old and someone very close to me lost her twin sister when they were 17 as a result of suicide by handgun. I do not like guns. I'm not a fan. I know how to clean a gun, I know how to handle a gun safely and I know how to fire a gun responsibly. I've gone target shooting and had a great time. I don't, however, believe that guns are or should be for everyone, just as automobiles are not allowed for everyone.
The answer is for the government to instate rigid training requirements and licensing provisions for guns, just as they have for automobiles. Set regulations for whom is able to take the training courses and receive the license in the first place. Once the safety course is taken, make the operator establish proficiency in front of a rangemaster or an officer of the law. No one under 16 is able to be licensed to drive in the United States and we don't have public outcry over this. People who are blind should not be able to drive, but there are those who do and no one is crying out to ban automobiles for the populace as a whole, even after at least two cases where people were unable to see road signs clearly and drove into street markets, killing and injuring multiple victims. If someone is caught driving without a license, they risk losing their automobile. If someone is caught using an automobile irresponsibly, they risk losing their license to drive. If they are caught driving without a license, they risk losing their automobile altogether. Why should it be any different for guns?
I remember a taglane for the U.S. vs. Larry Flynt that said, effectively, "You may not like what he says, but are you willing to give up his right to say it." This is how I feel regarding guns. I don't like the volume of guns that are out there. I don't like the damage that they cause. I do, however, respect the constitutional right to bear arms and I wouldn't have that taken away for my own personal agenda, lest other rights be taken away for someone else's agenda. But the responsibility of the government to protect us as citizens does not stop at acknowledging the second ammendment.
I propose that on a Federal level, a mandatory curriculum for safety and operation of firearms be established. Upon completion of this curriculum at a certified training institution, the operator is eligible to report to a certified rangemaster or law enforcement authority to display proficiency in the safety, handling, and operation of the weapon. Upon completion of these two requirements, the operator is now authorized to carry and use a gun. For different classes of guns, there are different levels of training and licensing required, e.g. someone licensed to carry a b.b. gun isn't authorized to carry a semi-automatic rifle. If a person is caught acting irresponsibly in the operation of their firearm, then they risk losing their license. If a person is caught using their firearm, responsiblly or not, without a license, then they risk losing their firearm on the spot.
It's not difficult to conceive. Will there be unlicensed gun users? Yes. Are there unlicensed drivers? Yes. Will people still die in gun related accidents or intentional acts of violence? Yes. Do people still die from automobile accidents or intentional acts of violence? Yes. At least, we will have made an effort to curb the irresponsible acts that lead to so much sufferring and tragedy each and every year in this nation. At the very least, the government will be acting and attempting to protect the citizens rather than just sitting on the fence and waiting to see which side is going to give them the most political strength and clout.
We are citizens of a great country. We are steadily eliminating ourselves due to ignorance and an absolute lack of compassion.
To all of you who have posted these ignorant, heartless, even ridiculously racist comments. I implore you to stop the next time you open your browser and consciously make an attempt NOT to check your heart at the door just because you're hiding behind some lame screenname and think that no one will know what you said. I wonder if you'd say the same things at church, at work, or at a family dinner where your face is seen and people can actually respond to you face to face. I somehow thing you'd lose some of your courage in those circumstances.
@Sid Taylor
I am not a grammar teacher, so I have no authorization to judge your grammar, though you took that license with the good Dr. up above. I don't believe that you or he are any less ignorant than the majority of the other posters here. Again, it comes down to personal agendas and heartless proclamations of superiority. I am, however a Texan, born and raised, and although I live in California now I will always consider myself a proud Texan. Our state has a rich history of great men and women who fought for their independance and moved their land in the direction that they wanted it to go. We were not sold to the United States, we fought for independance and subsequently joined the Union that had supported us in that fight. I am thankful for great artists, businessmen, musicians, politicians, and scientists that have come from our great state.
I am tired of people judging Texans as ignorant because of the fact that George W. Bush was a former governer of Texas and his father "adopted" Texas as their home for political reasons. They are not, never were, and never will be native Texans. There are a significant number of Texans, myself included, who did not like W. as a governer and did not want him in office as a president and are sick and tired of being associated with him by default due to his father's political ambitions.
The next time you want to tower over the ignorant Texans, consider the fact that the semiconductor at the heart of your computer processor was likely designed and processed by Texas Instruments, located in Dallas and I believe the largest manufacturer of semiconducters in the world. Considering their market share, there's probably a good chance that your computer is a Dell, manufactured and assempled in Rockport, Texas. Pretty good for a bunch of ignorant hicks, eh?
If you don't like W., then that's fine, but don't slam Texans for it. Don't insult our intelligence and ability to reason just because everyone else is. Who are you? One of many who thinks that they have the right to insult a state because their citizens have pride and they were associated with a very bad man. Take a look in the mirror and take pride in that accomplishment. Be careful, though, one leg on one bandwagon and one on another is going to make it really hard for you to keep from falling.

Good day,
Larry Bryan
England has guns banned, but still they have random shootings just like use. They still have gun crimes, people still get shot, but the difference is, the only people with guns ARE THE CRIMINALS, not even all the cops carry guns.
Banning guns is a knee jerk reaction from people who have the mental capacity of a 3 year old. Seriously, its about as dumb as banning peanuts because some people are alergic to it. Hey, more people die in car accidents than gun related deaths, lets ban cars! Oh, and how about that legal drug, alcohol, that is thecause of over 2/3rds of those vehicular deaths, not to mention twice as many related deaths. Did you know that people die every year from being eletrocuted?! LETS BAN ELECTRICITY! Wait, I just heard you can die from eating bad meat, WE HAVE TO BAN FOOD IMMEDIATELY!!!!
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 11:18AMWow, the comments are almost as stupid as Looney. An idiot shooting himself is not a good reason to ban guns but there are a whole lot of other good reasons. Guns don't protect you from your government; your vote does, learning about the issues does, contacting your elected officials does. Just because you don't like guns or the government doesn't give you the right to force your opinion on everyone else. Our laws are designed to protect the rights of the individual as long as they don't infringe in the rights of others. By law people have the right to have guns, people have the right to elect who they want as their leader even if you don't like them, and most unfortunately all you dumb-asses have the right to have children god help us all...

-Very diplomatic and well written. Even I didn't take the time to edit my piece and I wrote less.
-Texas has beautiful women. I know; I lived there for the Air Force.
-I'm not proposing we ban guns; just think that the advocates like to stand on only one side without clearly good ideas to solve the real problem.
... Shit... gotta go, i'm workin.
Hopefully he was a Republican. At least then the story would be partially uplifting.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 12:09PMVery nice ideas on eugenics you have there KS. "Good for him for eliminating his stupidity from my precious gene pool?" Know who else used to think like you? The fucking Nazi's. I can only hope that when you finally meet your end, it'll be at the business end of the barrel. It's the only ending hatemongers like you deserve, the only one that's fitting for your ignorance. And hell, it'd be funny as shit too.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 12:19PMMaybe if this idiot's gun had a really long barrel he'd have more trouble pointing it at himself. Require that all handguns have 3 foot barrels and gun deaths would plummet. They'd be harder to aim accurately and to carry around as well. Save your shotguns and rifles (and votes) for fighting the government. AK47s too I guess, although wanting an AK47 should be grounds for denial of the license.

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 12:34PMSeriously the guy wasn't thinking right at all. The rules I've learned when dealing with a gun is always treat it as its loaded and never point it at anything you don't want to kill. Now to the ppl who want to ban all guns, seriously ppl you know if you ban all guns the only ppl that are going to have them are law enforcement government and criminals. Let me just say this just like driving a car comes with responsibilities so does owning a gun. The only thing I would really like to see change with gun laws is they need to keep up to date criminal records of gun owners. Someone commits a violent crime revoke their gun license and collect their guns. With the assault rifles I'm kinda on the fence with no way you need that for hunting or protection so, I wouldn't be against another ban.
Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 1:01PM"What could have been a respectful discourse on actual solutions to a problem"
Larry, what problem is it that you want to discuss? Accidental firearms deaths in the US? Here's data for the most recent 5 years available on the CDC web site:
2002 - 762;
2003 - 730;
2004 - 649;
2005 - 630;
2006 - 680
In a country of about 300 million people, about 700 die each year due to firearms accidents. In contrast, about 3600 die each year due to drowning. There are a lot of bigger problems to solve than accidental shootings. You can check the numbers yourself here: http://webapp.cdc.gov/cgi-bin/broker.exe
I don't know what you are doing to solve this "problem." Personally, I'm an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor, NRA Certified Range Safety Officer, IDPA Range Safety Officer, and Chief Range Officer at my gun club. I take safety very, very seriously, I teach firearms safety, and I enforce safety on my range.
This young fellow was an idiot. Was his death a tragedy? Sure. But that doesn't change the fact that he was an idiot.

Henry cow: there was no luck (or lack of it) involved in this young man's death. Guns don't go off by themselves. Guns don't load themselves. Guns don't point themselves at your head.
There was no element of chance in this incident. He loaded the gun, pointed it at his own head and pulled the trigger.
If he'd followed rule 1 -- always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction -- he would be alive today. If he'd followed rule 2 -- always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot -- he would be alive today. If he'd followed rule 3 -- always keep your gun unloaded and action open until you are ready to use it -- he'd be alive today.
Following gun safety rules keeps you safe, not luck.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I can't expect everyone to love Texas like I do, but I do recognize and appreciate that you chose to compliment my post and my state rather than attacking and flaming me for my views. I agree that banning guns is not the answer, and I completely agree that the polarity on the issue is only serving to prolong a sensible, rational solution that can serve both sides while also protecting the people of this country.
@JLN
Thank you for taking the time to read my post, however I don't see how you are so threatened by me. I am in no way advocating the removal of guns from anyone, nor am I saying that guns should not be available to those who are responsible and able to use them safely.
I do see that you choose only to show numbers that relate to accidental firearms deaths and that the link you provide is not in anyway associated with those numbers.
If you'll read my post again, then you'll see that I referenced both accidental and intentional shootings. A death or injury is a death or injury no matter whether it was intentional or accidental. You can't ignore the larger bulk of numbers because they were intentional vs. accidental. End result, people died or were hurt due to improper or irresponsible use of firearms.
In light of that, here are some quick numbers from the cdc. Here's the report that I am referencing, and the link is valid: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5703a1.htm
The report is from the National Violent Death Reporting System and it is their Surveillance of violent deaths in 16 of 17 states that report data to them. California was not included because they were not equipped to provide state wide data at that time.
Of 15,962 violent death incidents that occurred in only 16 out of 50 states during 2005, firearms were used in 48.9%, which translates to 7,813. Incidentally, there were 160 deaths credited to drowning.
So 7,813 people died due to firearm related injuries in only 16 out of the 50 states in the year 2005.
So kudos to you for finding the lowest number possible to defend your argument, but the families of the victims that died in the, at least, 7,183 firearms related deaths in 2005 would not appreciate your egregious arrogance.
You ask me what the problem is? The problem is that people are dying on a large scale due to improper use of guns. Furthermore, people like you are so obsessed with the right to bear arms that you ignore the fact that thousands, yes thousands, of people are dying in this country due to the fact that they are not shown the proper way to handle the firearms or are not fit to handle them in the first place.
I commend you for your hard work in receiving your multiple safety and handling certifications and I applaud you for propagating that knowledge among your customers and those with whom you come in contact. That is not enough, though. There are many driving instructors in the United States, but that does not in any way alleviate the need for the average driver to know the safety laws and proper way to handle a vehicle, to display proficiency before being allowed to operate that vehicle and to operate the vehicle in a responsible fashion in order to maintain that privilege.
The laws we have in place requiring qualification and licensing to drive a motor vehicle not only serve as preventative measures to ensure that motorists are driving safely and responsibly, but also as deterrents to those who would be tempted to use their cars to harm other people or destroy other people's property.
We have a right to free speech, but if you were to sexually harass one of your patrons, it would not protect you. A right to bear arms will only protect us insofar as we ensure that those who bear arms do so in a responsible fashion that will not bring harm to others. In this, my idea of having mandatory comprehensive training, mandatory licensing, and very real consequences, i.e. losing your license to carry and operate the firearm or losing the firearm itself, would go a great way in preventing accidents due to improper or irresponsible use of firearms and deterring intentional harm involving firearms.
Will this eliminate firearm related deaths? Again, no. Will it stop people from getting injured due to firearms? No. But I am certain that it will serve to reduce these injuries and deaths, just as it has in automobiles, without eliminating the right to carry the guns at all.
What am I doing to solve the problem? I'm attempting to constructively propose an alternative to banning firearms for civilians altogether. I'm not under any illusion that this will reach the eyes or ears of anyone with any true influence, but I can, and will, also send letters to congressmen. Perhaps they may precipitate a mutual resolution that can serve the people of the United States as a whole, rather than just those who want to carry guns or those who want them banned.
Honestly, given your credentials and the fact that you claim to advocate gun safety, I would think you would be all for enforcing the education of users of guns in lieu of having them banned altogether. Then again, I guess I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt in thinking that you actually give a damn for those thousands of people that died. After all, you've got your guns and you can shoot them and in the end that's all that really matters to you, isn't it?

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 3:53PMThere is no reason for an ordinary citizen to have a gun.
Guns should be banned. If you feel like you need a gun to protect yourself, you should move out of your trailer and into a neighborhood where you're not surrounded by uneducated retards. If you can't afford to move, you should go back to school, get your high school diploma, work hard, learn something useful and get a better job. Buying a gun doesn't protect you or your loved ones. It just makes the world a more dangerous place. No guns = no shootings. It's pretty simple.

I keep them in a secure place in my home and business. I do, however, feel comfortable knowing that in the event that someone would threaten harm to me, my family, or my employees that I have some method of defense.
Regarding your comment about living in a trailer, some folks don't have a choice and that's the best they can do for now. I can assure you, if they could afford to move, they probably would.

I'm afraid I'm not projecting. I simply don't see where your argument came from if you weren't threatened by my comment. There is nothing about you that threatens me. I pity you, in that you could have gone to such lengths to learn gun safety and yet you criticize me for saying that more regulation and education might decrease the number of deaths that come from not using guns safely or responsibly. You apparently made up numbers to somehow discredit me, so I responded in like, but with valid, confirmable data.
Again, I'm not advocating banning firearms in anyway, just the regulation of their use in a safe and responsible fashion, or not used by those who cannot handle that. I was really hoping that you would add a bit of rationale to your numbers by posting an actual link but you didn't, so I've really got nothing left to say to you.

Posted On: Tuesday, Sep. 22 2009 @ 9:43PMOK, lets ban guns...make them illegal. That way the people who DO obey the laws of the land can go about their daily routine in constant fear and trembling in knowing that the only ones armed are the criminals who don't obey the laws anyway. Yeah, that's the ticket! Let's make it easier for the criminals to victimize everyone else! Let's add one more insignificant law (in the criminals' eyes) for the criminals to simply ignore.
If you happen to survive the home invasion, don't worry, the cops that you called using 911 will get there...eventually...to take the report on how you were helpless to fend off the attacker or attackers who had their way with your wife and daughters...and may have even brought them along for the ride when they departed; so they can repeatedly rape them and then murder and discard them when they're done.
Oh, by the way, drivers licences compared to gun licences are apples and oranges. Your "right to drive" (no such thing) is not protected by the constitution. Your right to keep and bear arms is.
There are millions of drivers on the road every day. If they are licensed drivers, they passed a test that certified that they know the laws and that they can operate a motor vehicle safely; regardless, thousands die on our roadways every year. Keeping it together long enough to get a license is the easy part...you can't fix stupid. Even a licensed driver or firearms bearer can do a stupid thing and kill themselves or others. Another license isn't going to fix the problems. More classes won't fix the problem. Why? You can't fix stupid. Especially drunk-stupid.

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 1:04AMI for one, applaud this method of demonstrating gun safety. It's an effective method of weeding out some of those who are likely to pose a serious risk to others by owning guns. This way, if you're a complete moron, the "gun safety" test will make sure you don't own a gun for very long.
Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 2:19AMI like this story,
stupid people like that should be taken out of the gene pool,
let evolution do its job, in the end we'll end up with a better breed of people
The general poor standard of grammar and intellectual content of the letters on this subject fills me with fear for us all.
To place a firearm in the hands of such folk is a fearsome reality that can only end in tragedy.
My wish is that when I eventually meet my maker, I do not have blood on my hands - either as a result of offensive or defensive actions.
The real heroes are those who turn their backs on violence.
The environment did change. A bullet was introduced into it. The man failed to adapt to the introduction of the bullet and died. Assuming he had no kids, his line of genetic material was then rendered extinct.
Rule #1: Assume every firearm is always loaded.
Rule #2: Never point the firearm at something you aren't willing to destroy.
This guy broke both those rules. There is no way to teach "firearms safety" without them. Once you fail to demonstrate these principles you have instantly disqualified yourself from being anything but an idiot. Sad? Yes. But it's still simply idiocy-induced death, no politics required to understand that.
Either that or she killed him.

Just like every hot topic,.."Pro choice", "Gun control", "Gay rights" etc. etc.... you have passionate opinions on both sides....the right to have an opinion, is an American blessing, that was earned by the use of weapons,... but this story isn't about our military use of guns, it's about our personal use of them......I for one believe our forefathers had it right, when they included the 2nd ammendment. I don't personally own any guns, but I feel more comfortable knowing that I have the right to obtain one, if I feel the need for some additional personal protection for my family.
For those who do not agree with my opinion, it is also your right, to not own a gun. Respect my choice, and I will respect yours. I will never try to change your mind, because it is not my business.
For those of you who attack, and insult others, because their opinion is diffrent, are the truely ignorant individuals. Once you move that direction, you have abandoned all credibilty, and portrayed yourself as a socialist, who does Not believe in democracy.

The Second Amendment says that I have the right to keep and bear arms. And that I will do!
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"
I have read it many times and my understanding and interpretation is what I will abide by. I will be that well regulated Militia of just one. I won't be revolting in the street or firing my gun aimlessly in the air....I will be secure in my own home or business and will defend to my death what I have worked so hard for.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed"
But that's not the point.
The point is that, without the Minutemen's right to keep and bear arms, there would have been NO 13 FREE STATES IN THE FIRST PLACE!
So any of you who look at the gun rather than the man, think how life would be if the Redcoats had won. No Louisiana Purchase, no War of 1812, no Civil War between the States... just 13 nice, comfy colonies paying their taxes to the King of England... in Pounds Sterling, not in Dollars...
Drinking tea, not coffee...
and having to sing "God Save the King every god-given morning in school.

Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 11:52AMEver wonder what the founding fathers thought the "well regulated militia" consisted of?
Let's look at a quote from Thomas Jefferson, shall we: "Every citizen should be a soldier. This was the case with the Greeks and Romans, and must be that of every free state."
The Greeks and the Romans of the Helenistic Era owned their own weaponry. In their day, it was swords and spears; on ours and in Jefferson's time, it is firearms.
Still in doubt? Here's another: "For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security."
Should the governemt regulate or restrict our rights to keep and bear arms because it is for our own good? Jefferson didn't think so: "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."
Shall the people keep and bear arms to defend themselves? Yes! Against whom? Jefferson has some ideas on that: "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
and...
"What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms."
So, what did he and other like-minded patriots mean when the Second Amendment was written? Pelosi doesn't know...she wasn't there. Brady folks don't know...they weren't there. Best to get the opinions of our forefathers from their own words. After all, they had much better command over the english language than we do. Back then, they said what the meant and meant what they said. We should go with that.
On top of that, compair the context of the other amendments to see if they are talking about individual rights; and, you will find, that to take the 2nd Amendment as standing for other than individual rights, is to take it out of context of the rest of the document. Even beyond the original 10 amendments, look to the 14th. It too, protects the individual rights of every citizen.
I leave you with this last Jeffersonian quote: "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms."
Do we REALLY need more gun control; or, should we do better at enforcing the laws that we already have? Oh, by the way, criminals are ignoring them.
Shall we make more restrictive laws? I would argue against such a thing. In fact, I have. Below is an excerpt from an argument I wrote last year:
Overly restrictive laws that violate Second Amendment rights can, and do, have dire consequences. Consider the following:
Bricie Tribble heard a strange noise in her Apache Junction, Ariz., [sic] home shortly after midnight and decided to investigate. What she found was a man kneeling by a recliner as he rummaged through her purse. According to Apache Junction police, when Tribble asked the intruder to identify himself, he replied, "I'm going to kill everyone in this house, including you." Tribble, who had armed herself just in case, fired at least one fatal shot with her .45-cal. handgun. Police said the man had begun his crime spree earlier that evening, abducting a woman at a nearby Wal-Mart before driving her to a secluded location and then raping and shooting her. [sic] The victim lived and gave police a description of her attacker (American Rifleman Issue: 4/1/2000, as cited by NRA-ILA, 2009b, p. 2, para. 10).
Had Bricie Tribble been denied the right to possess a loaded firearm in her home, the intruder may well have carried out his threat. Thanks to having the freedom to exercise her Second Amendment right, Ms. Tribble likely avoided becoming another rape and homicide victim. Is it possible that proper enforcement of current laws could have prevented the criminal from possessing the weapon used in the rape and attempted murder of his previous victim? The possibility does exist with background checks. Is it possible that the intruder would not have been stopped, and that he would have raped and killed Bricie Tribble of Apache Junction, if Arizona had the same gun ban legislation that was recently lifted from the District of Columbia and remains in effect in other jurisdictions? Ponder how Ms. Tribble’s situation might be different in such a jurisdiction, in context of the stated intent of the intruder. Consider these questions when considering the value of a proposed or current piece of gun control legislation. Consider the level of enforcement and the ability to enforce the current laws in our communities before weighing the possibility of adding more restrictive laws that disarm law abiding citizenry. Are there still laws that infringe on Second Amendment rights while doing little to reduce criminal use of firearms? Remember Cesare Beccaria wrote that laws "which forbid [individuals] to wear arms" serve only to disarm "those only who are not disposed to commit the crime which the laws mean to prevent." (Ingraham, 1918)
Guns aren't the problem, people are, as we all know. Some people are just incredible stupid as the man in the story. I support the right to own guns. I personally don't hunt, but my spouse does so I benefit by having all the meat we need in our freezer. That's right, we eat meat! And I have a loaded shotgun in my bedroom for personal protection and glad to have it as I spend the day by myself at home when he's at work. Would I use it if someone broke in my house and threatened bodily harm? Damn straight!
Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 3:00PMI love how so many of you got trolled by Henry Cow. Aww man. Its awesome that they make an OBVIOUSLY SARCASTIC comment and you ALL got TROLLED.
Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 4:55PM"Then again, it did occur in Jefferson County, Missouri."
So? Hillsboro is only 20 miles south of the St. Louis beltway system.
Idiocy is not bound by geography.
Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 5:59PMGood, let these dumb inbred wackos kill themselves off. The average IQ of the nation gets higher everytime a right-winger dies. The country starts to smell better too.

Run against PB777, so he will have an easy victory....
For those of you who do not like our bills of rights, move to Iran,.... I'm sure they would be glad to have people, who do not appreciate freedom....
Posted On: Wednesday, Sep. 23 2009 @ 9:19PMYou all should be ashamed of yourselves. A man is dead and you are all showing your e-peens off to each other and being incredibly stupid.
(with the exception of the lone commentators talking about the death of this man)
Are you all sociopaths? A man is dead, and the irony was that he was teaching firearm safety. He obviously ignored the top rule. Do not point it at anything that you do not want destroyed.
Prayers for his family, and shame on the rest of you nutjobs...

Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 5:32AMIf all you Anti-gun people would stop a minute and think about the fact that a gun is an object. Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people in this case an idiot who had a gun killed himself. Without Guns the bad people of the world would be in charge BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT GIVE UP THEIR GUNS. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT LAWS. Thomas Jefferson (yes one of the founding fathers) Said "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who did not" In WW2 some french citizens fought back against the Nazis, historians agree that German would have had a much harder time running over countries if the people had been armed. NO ONE WOULD ATTACK US HER ON OUR SHORES, BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH OUR CITIZENS IF THEY WERE ABLE TO DEFEAT OUR MILITARY. If one day some country comes knocking you Antis will change your mind but don't expect any protection from the prepared citizens. You might get some but you don't deserve it. In closing I will leave you with this, if the need ever arrises to defend this country us gun owners will be on the front lines saving your asses while you cry yourself to sleep after realizing what a waste your life was and just how wrong you were. Hopefully someone will have pity on you and allow you to squat in their protected area. Maybe they will let you clean the toilets...
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 1:39PMTry this famous quote on for size:
"You cannot invade the mainland United States.
There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."
- Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
(Japanese Navy)
"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon and citizens firearms are indelibly related."
- George Washington
"The most effective way to find ourselves enslaved will not be done openly. If weakened we will sink gradually.
I ask, who are the militia? They consist of the whole people,
.... except a few public officers."
- Thomas Jefferson
Posted On: Thursday, Sep. 24 2009 @ 2:20PMAnother one of my favorites from Jefferson:
"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms .... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.
Such laws make things worse for the assaulted
and better for the assailants. They serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be
attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
- Thomas Jefferson
well as i live over the pond this storey mad me chuckle, he had a very apt surname well at least there is one less idiot to spoil the gene pool
Posted On: Friday, Sep. 25 2009 @ 6:53AMCanadians have guns, too. They just don't use them on each other (or themselves) nearly as much as we do. In fact, they have about 7 million gun owners and fewer than 100 gun-related deaths per year. Ever seen "Bowling for Columbine"? The culture of fear in this country is what causes gun violence to skyrocket. So it ain't the guns, it ain't the gun owners (more than anyone else, anyway), it's that culture of fear, the flames of which are fanned by the government, media, teabaggers, birthers and other wingnuts. This country is fucked, but it ain't the guns' fault!

What happens if we are "snooty" (smart), educated, and come from the Northeast, but still like to own a gun? I dunno, but just knowing that if someone comes into my home trying to do damage to my family they will end up riddled with 9mm hollow tip rounds. This is somewhat comforting especially since they will never have the chance to do it to anyone else's family. Defend your barn, bury the crooks.
Posted On: Thursday, Oct. 22 2009 @ 11:01PMNotice carefully that every leftist commenter here either posted something that was (1) unintelligible, or (2) downright fascist. The left doesn't really give a fuck - these people have no souls, no morality, nothing. They're empty, and they don't care if their fly-by-night opinions result in personal harm coming to you and your family.
Leftists: Die. Please. Help America, as you claim to want to do. All of you.
Posted On: Sunday, Oct. 25 2009 @ 9:16AMWhy does the sheriff have a fake middle name? that seems stranger to me than the name of the dead guy.
Posted On: Sunday, Oct. 25 2009 @ 2:14PM"End user says:
Ummm, sounds to me like SHE blew his brains out and had this foolish story to cover it up. No gun owner would ever be so stupid as to put a loaded gun to their own head, unloaded or loaded as a "safety exercise".
I smell homicide"
Like Jon-Erik Hexum, huh.
Posted On: Monday, Oct. 26 2009 @ 4:19AMI think it's a safe bet that this guy didn't know that much about gun safety, considering he broke all four basic gun safety rules. People like this shouldn't even be considered as viable debating points for gun-related issues.
Still, I wonder if it's really true. No gun owner I know would ever be this stupid.
