McGarrell in Haiti.

Flo McGarrell, an artist and graduate of Crossroads College Prep, was killed in Tuesday's earthquake in Haiti. He lived in Jacmel and specialized in agrisculpture, sculpture constructed from organic material and plants.

After leaving St. Louis, McGarrell studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In Jacmel, he directed a nonprofit arts center called FOSAJ. In the summers, he would travel to Newbury, Vermont.

An interview with the Art:21 blog recreates a now-lost world:

McGarrell tells me that Jacmel is a place where the senses awake-it is visually rich and energetic. The view outside the window is the bright Haitian sunlight, the ocean, coconut palms, almond and mango trees. The breeze brings him smells such as burning trash, cigarette smoke, marijuana from the beach and, in the evenings, the bar next door blasts Kompa music.
