David Carruthers: From House Arrest to Prison

Carruthers was known for bringing the brains to the scrappy sports gambling outfit.

​After more than three years on house arrest, the former CEO of BETonSPORTS today was sentenced to 33 months in a federal prison.

David Carruthers, a Scotsman who helmed the now-defunct cyber-sports book formerly based in Costa Rica, was the first company executive to plead guilty in the racketeering case, and had hoped to receive probation from U.S. District Court Judge Carol Jackson.

Carruthers received a lesser sentence than BETonSPORTS' founder, Gary Kaplan, who is doing 51 months at the Marion, Illinois, penitentiary.
