Hey Mom and Dad, Supernanny is Coming to St. Louis to Tame Your Naughty Little Monsters

Dear parents: Supernanny understands. Your kids have gone beserk. They are incorrigible, completely out of control. One more tantrum, one more cuss word, one more scream, and you'll surely be headed for a padded room.

You can't stand it a minute longer. You think of that line in the Ray Carver short story, What Is It?: "He turns the empty glass in his hand, and considers biting off the rim."

Relax, Don't bite, just yet. Jo Frost, that unflappable British nanny, may soon be a knocking at your door, donning a black suit, glasses, a flourish of smiles, and all loaded up with handy tips on how to handle your little bundles of joy.

That's right, mom and dad, America's favorite child-rearing show, Supernanny, is coming to St. Louis.

Yesterday, the Daily RFT spoke with Vanessa Ranko, casting director for the one-hour program on ABC that begins its sixth season this spring. Beginning January 21, Ranko, TV camera in hand, will spend a week here, interviewing at least two prospective families each day.

She finds these troubled clans from various postings in daycare centers, Supernanny program recruiters and through media coverage. Ranko picks and chooses who to contact and interview from the many e-mail she receives from desperate parents.

"I'm not sure how many families we'll feature," she says. "If I see fourteen amazing families, we'll use them all during the season. If I don't see anyone, then we won't use any of them."

Ranko says she is hoping to turn Supernanny loose to work her childcare magic on a few "good old-fashioned Midwesterners."

Asked her definition of a good old-fashioned Midwesterner, Ranko replies, "A big family, living on a farm, lots of corn -- and lots of kids who are really bad, but that still, their parents make them all sit down together for dinner."

So that's what an old-fashioned Midesterner is. The Daily RFT has always been a little unclear on that.
