St. Louis Rugby Rams Charge Through National Tournament

Categories: Sports

The St. Louis Rugby Rams, the region's only wheelchair rugby -- aka, murderball -- team, placed second in Division II the USQRA (US Quad Rugby Association) National Playoffs in Birmingham, Alabama, last weekend, in their first-ever appearance in the national tournament. Team member Eric Newby also won the Best 2.0 award. Classifications, ranging from 0.5 to 3.5, are based on player functionality, not ability.

The St. Louis squad went into the tournament seeded fourth after its third-place finish in the Heartland Sectionals the weekend of April 4-6.

At Nationals, the Rugby Rams defeated the Frazier TNT (of Tennessee) and the East Coast Cripplers (of eastern Virginia), but fell twice to the Utah Scorpions, the second time in the championship game. Even though you already know how it all went down, you can watch webcasts of the games here.

There are thirteen players on the Rugby Rams, including Paralympians Kerri Morgan and Clayton Braun.
