The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will grow by at least 50 new officers over the next three years.

Today the city was granted $8.6 million in federal stimulus dollars to fund the additional cops. The city currently has 1,290 police officers and could end up adding 65 more by the end of the summer with the use of the federal dollars and city matching funds.

In a news conference today, Chief Dan Isom said overall crime in the city had dropped by 12.4 percent in '09 and will continue to drop with the addition of extra police.
