You've got to hand it to the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis for using some bold PR "strategery" to spin the demolition of downtown's symbol of failure into something of a party.

On Friday afternoon, the "US Bank Bridge Bash" gets underway with live music, catering, probably some liquor, and as is wryly pointed out by the publicists, "a lot of broken glass."

Below is the press release issued last night, with all the details.

CREATIVE DESTRUCTION FRIDAY!
Downtown's Least-Loved Icon Has a Date With a Wrecking Ball
US Bank Bridge Bash, Friday!

WHAT: The four-story Washington Avenue Skybridge, linking the former St. Louis Centre mall and the former Dillard's department store, finally has a date with a wrecking ball, May 21st.  It's creative destruction worthy of a party, so the US Bank Bridge Bash will rock Washington Avenue as the obliteration begins.

The $450,000 complete demolition of downtown's least-loved structure could take up to a month, during which time the 600 block of Washington Avenue will remain closed. The bridge's less-infamous fraternal twin, spanning Locust Street, will also come down later this year.

The US Bank Bridge Bash, produced by the Downtown Community Improvement District and sponsored by US Bank and Emmis Radio, will feature live music from BIG MIKE AGUIRRE, catering by Levy, and a lot of broken glass.

WHEN: US Bank Bridge Bash runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
Friday, 21 May 2010.  The wrecking ball will first strike the Skybridge at 5:10 p.m., and the hits will keep on coming as the party goes on.

WHO: This demolition is the first step in the long-awaited redevelopment of the former St. Louis Centre mall and the former Dillard's department store.  Spinnaker St. Louis is leading the development of the Mercantile Exchange Retail District, including the ground floors of the former mall and the former Dillards. A joint-venture of Environmental Operations and Clayco is redeveloping the upper floors of the mall for the Missouri Development Finance Board.

Spinnaker is also developing the balance of the Dillards building and christening the property The Laurel, in honor of Washington Avenue's original moniker. SCR Investments is leading the renovation of 600 Washington (formerly One City Centre). US Bank has been instrumental in every aspect of these projects.

Interview opportunities with Mayor Francis Slay; Mark Mantovani, Partnership for Downtown St. Louis; Stacy Hastie, Environmental Operations; Amos Harris, Spinnaker St. Louis.

Visual opportunities: Wrecking ball crashing into the skybridge at 5 pm sharp!
