Mark McGwire Highway To be Renamed After Mark Twain

Great works of literature are immortal. Baseball records -- especially dubious ones -- are not.

So it's fitting then that Missouri legislators yesterday approved a bill to rename a stretch of Interstate 70 after Missouri's America's most famous author, Mark Twain.

The stretch of interstate through St. Louis had been renamed after Mark McGwire in 1999, a year after he smashed Roger Maris' home-run record. Controversy over the highway name had been brewing for years, ever since McGwire was implicated for using steroids. The slugger's admission earlier this year that he did, indeed, use performance enhancing drugs pretty much guaranteed that the highway would be renamed.
