'Cause we don't want our alleys looking like this.
Mayor Francis Slay's office today announced that St. Louis is resuming twice-weekly trash pick up effective immediately.

In an effort to save money, the city began a trial once-a-week trash pick up program last November that affected about 40 percent of city residents spread among all 28 wards. Kara Bowlin, Slay's spokeswoman, tells Daily RFT that the city saved about $300,000 in reducing trash pick up.

Still, many residents weren't having it.

In a statement today, Street Department director Todd Waelterman said his office had "listened to concerns and requests of the citizens" in bringing back twice-a-week trash collection.

"With the holiday weekend and warm weather approaching, twice-per-week trash collection will help to keep our neighborhoods clean and sanitary," said Waelterman. "However, I hope people continue to think twice about what they throw away -- many of the items that end up in landfills can easily be recycled."

The city operates 27 recycling drop-off centers, though, here's an idea:

How about keeping the once-a-week trash collection but add a once-a-week curbside recycling pick-up? Or is that too progressive an idea for St. Louis?

The answer, says Bowlin, is "no." However, it's going to take some time before that happens.

Says Bowlin in an email today to Daily RFT:
The City of St. Louis is looking at making curbside recycling an option, but it's difficult in our current fiscal situation. It would be more expensive both in terms of start-up costs (it would require new and different equipment than what the City currently uses) and operating costs. However, the City is not ruling out curbside recycling altogether -- we understand that many residents would be very interested in curbside recycling, so the City and the Refuse Department are doing everything they can to see how they can make it a possibility.
