Downtown Residents Want Lure Nightclub Disciplined or Closed

Categories: Bars, Community
Members of the Downtown St. Louis Residents Association hosted a meeting last night to discuss what can be done about disruptive behavior outside area nightclubs.

Of specific concern to the group is the Lure nightclub (formerly Lucky's) at 1204 Washington Avenue. Just last week club-goers who may have attended Lure earlier in the evening fired shots at police from a nearby parking lot.

In attendance at yesterday's meeting were downtown alderwomen Kacie Starr Triplett, Phyllis Young and April Ford-Griffin and 4th District Police Captain Gwen Spicer.

St. Louis excise commissioner Bob Kraiberg, also on hand last night, says it's not within his power -- or those of other city bureaucrats -- to shut down a business. However, the residents could gather petitions of nearby neighbors to strip the nightclub of its liquor license.

"Once you have the neighborhood against you, its the kiss of death," Kraiberg tells Daily RFT.

Today KMOX quotes Kraiberg using the same phrase in different manner, calling Lure's hip hop night the "kiss of death" because of the clientele it attracts.

Kraiberg tells Daily RFT that quote was taken out of context.

"Having the neighborhood against you is the kiss of death," he says. "Most the people who attend these hip-hop shows behave themselves, it's the five percent who don't that ruins it for everyone."

Kraiberg said he left the meeting with the impression that the residents planned to follow through with the petition drive, though no one has officially filed paperwork on the matter with his office.

Lure was opened up in 2007 as Lucky's. In 2008 the club's owners changed the name to Lure.
