The first came August 2 when Nieves won the G.O.P. primary for state Senate District 26. The second came this morning when Nieves beat out five other candidates to convincingly win Daily RFT's Ass Clown of the Week competition.
Nieves captured 46 percent of the vote after he was accused last week of assaulting a political rival in his campaign office. According to the complaint filed against Nieves, the state Senate candidate pulled a gun on a man and threatened to kill him.
Other receiving Ass Clown votes included...
Ed Martin, the Republican candidate for Congress, who may have stretched the truth last week in a press release concerning incumbent Congressman Russ Carnahan. Martin earned 22 percent of the vote.
Cincinnati infielder Brandon Phillips came in third place, winning 17 percent of the vote for calling the Cardinals "little bitches."
