Delilah, Radio's Queen of Sap, Pitches in to Paint Belleville All Pretty

Laugh if you want, but we here (OK, some of us here) at Daily RFT have always firmly believed that Delilah is a force of good. Sure, she plays nothing but the sappiest of music, but when she starts reading listeners' dilemmas out loud on the air, and starts offering support and encouragement, how can you not doubt the sincerity of that husky voice?

Now it seems Delilah is just as concerned with urban rehab as she is with relationships. Last summer, she organized a program to give a complete "makeover" to her hometown, Port Orchard, Washington, one that, as she writes on her website, "takes 10,000 gallons of paint, hours of power washing and days of weed pulling." Home Depot provided the paint, 500 volunteers provided the labor and the whole thing came off so beautifully that Delilah decided to invite other towns to apply to be her next Paint the Town project.

The lucky winner was none other than Belleville. Kraig Kitchin, co-president of Delilah's production company, Big Shoes Productions, told a crowd of Bellevillians Wednesday that their town has good buildings, strong volunteers and is "picturesque".

The finer details have yet to be ironed out, but Home Depot has already promised to donate 14,000 gallons of paint and related painting supplies, enough to cover (by some estimates) 60 buildings.

Delilah herself will pay a visit October 15-17 and promote the town on her show, which airs nightly on 209 cities. (Here you can find it on KEZK (102.5 FM) from 7 p.m. till midnight.) Here's hoping that she'll dispense some advice while she's here. There's nothing like painting that makes you want to pour out your problems to a stranger. Especially when the alternative is listening sappy music.
