Pujols, La Russa to Attend Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" Rally

I don't know who's going to be there, who's going to accept it. But the gist of the day is not political. I think it's a really good concept, actually. -- Tony La Russa to stltoday.com.

So, let's get this straight, TLR. You know next to nothing about conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally that you and Albert Pujols plan to attend tomorrow as representatives of the St. Louis Cardinals?

Actually, you're in good company.

Beck's website for the rally gives precious few details about the event expected to bring 20,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech at the very same location.

This, however, we do know: Despite Beck's promises that "Restoring Honor" is non-political, the two main speakers are to be himself and Sarah Palin. Hmm.

Beck bills the rally as a fundraiser for a charity for children of special op forces killed in battle or training. Though one wonders how much money a free event will raise. Moreover, what exactly is the "honor" that Beck is hoping to "restore"?

The Post-Dispatch today adds that the rally is supposed to include a faith-based message "something that squares with Pujols' commitment to his faith as well as his Pujols Family Foundation."

Yes, Beck is a religious man, broadcasting morning prayers he has with ministers to ask that God right our country -- quite literally. Then there is Beck's call for Christians to leave their churches if their pastor mentions the words "social justice."

Anyhoo, it would seem to me that La Russa and Pujols might want to spend their weekend concentrating on how to climb out of the 4-game hole they've dug themselves into with the Reds. Then again, perhaps they'll be so inspired -- their honor restored -- that they'll leave Saturday's rally and lead the Cardinals to the playoffs. God willing.

Oh, and here's Colbert's take on "Restoring Honor"...
