And they call it puppy love...
Updated at 1:58 p.m. with comment from Ed Martin's campaign.

We weren't able to attend last Friday's debate between Congressman Russ Carnahan and Republican challenger Ed Martin (and token Constitution Party candidate Nicholas Ivanovich).

That said, one thing from the coverage of that meeting stood out to us.

That was the moment during the face-off when Carnahan and Martin reportedly agreed that  Proposition B is bad. The November ballot initiative (read it here) would regulate dog-breeding facilities in Missouri, which has been dubbed the Puppy Mill Capital of America.

Recently Tea Party bloggers have come out against Prop. B, arguing that the referendum equates pet ownership to slavery and is another invasion of our civil liberties at the hands of big government. So we know why Martin might not like Prop. B.

But Carnahan?

Reached for comment today, Carnahan's campaign manager Angela Barranco tells Daily RFT that the the congressman supports Proposition B.

She acknowledges, however, that the audience Friday might have been confused by Carnahan's answer to the question as he stated that -- in general -- he's against over burdensome regulations on agriculture.

"Russ is definitely in favor of the humane treatment of dogs," says Barranco.

Meanwhile, Martin's campaign spokeswoman Theresa Petry points out that Carnahan flip-flopped his position on Sunday's debate in Jefferson County, throwing his support behind Proposition B after saying the opposite on Friday.

She adds that Martin is also for the humane treatment of dogs and all animals. He just doesn't think we need further legislation to get there. "He believes the current state laws
on the books need to be enforced to address the unfortunately growing problem of puppy mills in Missouri," says Petry.
