The Japanese Garden
Those New Englanders don't have the monopoly they thought they did on The Crispy Season. Midwest Living magazine has compiled a list of the 25 finest places to watch fall's glory overtake summer's muggy haze. And three of them are near St. Louis!

The Missouri Botanical Garden right here in the city nears the top of the list, and rightly so. Watch color come to Seiwa-en, the largest Japanese strolling garden in the country. Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon playing hooky from work. Not that we would ever do that. Ever.

Take a romantic weekend and head for wine country in central Missouri. There's plenty of intense foliage to be intoxicated by, not to mention sipping from the fruit of the vines.

Or, if you prefer to do your peeping from a more active vantage point, strap on your helmet and bike the Katy Trail. It begins close by in St. Charles, and is the country's longest rail-to-trail bike trail.

As a newbie to the Midwest, your correspondent is pretty stoked to try them all.
