Chopper Down in West County; Missouri Highway Patrol Pilot Killed

A Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter crashed around 11 a.m. this morning in unincorporated west St. Louis County killing the pilot. He was the only person in the aircraft. No one on the ground was injured.

According to reports, the helicopter crashed shortly after lifting off from Spirit of America Airport, landing in a street in in the 1800 block of Horseshoe Ridge Road, a suburb of large homes and wooded lawns.

The chopper was performing traffic enforcement, according to the Highway Patrol. The name of the pilot and the cause of the crash, have not yet been released. FAA investigators are currently on the scene.
