Claire McCaskill: Champion to Flight Attendants

American Airlines announced today that it would rehire 545 furloughed TWA flight attendants, and Sen. Claire McCaskill is pumped

TWA and American Airlines merged in 2001, and 2,500 flight attendants, many of them employees for the former TWA, were laid off with the right to reclaim their jobs in order of seniority for any job openings at American Airlines for the next several years. St. Louis and Kansas City were former TWA hubs, so the areas took the major fallout of the firings. 

The furlough contract ran out January 1, 2008, and McCaskill stepped in to extend the agreement. 

As a senator, McCaskill spends a lot of time up in the air going back and forth between the capital and Missouri. Place your bets now: How long before a flight attendant recognizes her and slips an extra hot towel her way?

"Over the years, I've met so many former TWA flight attendants who loved their jobs and wanted nothing more than to return to work," McCaskill said in a press release today. "This is a great day for those people, and I couldn't be happier for them." 

McCaskill's next hurdle in her quest to prove that she really is a superhero to flight attendants: Get Stephen Slater his job at Jet Blue back.
