Lions 44 - Rams 6: Two Steps Forward, One Giant Leap Back

Early in the first half of yesterday's game in Detroit, when the Rams trailed just 3-0, the offense was moving with ease toward the end zone. Sam Bradford completed a pass to Brandon Gibson, who shook off three tackles for a long gain. Danny Amendola nabbed the next reception and the lovable little wideout had the goal line in sight, ready to put the Rams in the lead...and then he fumbled.
The Rams never recovered.
Yup, after showing some serious signs of life with two wins in two weeks, the same ol' shitty Rams were back again yesterday. They repeatedly shot themselves in the foot and got blown out by the hapless Lions.
Among yesterday's lowlights:
* Calvin Johnson repeatedly made the Rams corners his bitch. Detroit offensive coordinator Scott Linehan (the same inept head coach who helped make the Rams as miserable as they are today) called one fade route after another for his colossal receiver against overmatched corners Bradley Fletcher and Ron Bartell. Johnson jumped over, ran past, reached around and generally made a mockery of the St. Louis secondary. The only thing capable of stopping him was a game-ending injury.
* Speaking of Bartell, he dropped the easiest interception of all-time in the second quarter.
* The Rams put the "special" in special teams: they foolishly called for an onside kick to start the game and gave up a 105 kick return for a touchdown to start the second quarter. Their best special teams play of the night was when Detroit wideout Nate Burleson caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter, punted the ball into the stands to celebrate and got hit with a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.
* And to cap it all off, Mark Clayton, the team's best free agent acquisition and Bradford's favorite target left the game with a season-ending knee injury.
The only positives yesterday were the 49ers losing yet again (falling to 0-5 for the first time since 1979), the always-exceptional play of Steven Jackson (114 yards on 25 carries), and Bradford finishing the game with his throwing shoulder still intact.
