Vatican Got it Wrong: The Simpsons Aren't Catholic, They're Presbylutheran

If Rev. Lovejoy is Catholic, where's his collar?
As you may have heard by now, this past weekend the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano published an article arguing that cartoon characters Homer and Bart Simpson are Catholic.

The article quotes a Jesuit priest who cites as proof a 2005 episode of the show in which Bart and Homer meet with a Catholic clergyman (narrated by actor Liam Neeson) to consider converting to the religion.

Our knee jerk reaction here at Daily RFT was to call B.S. on the Vatican. After all, the pastor routinely portrayed on the show, Rev. Timothy Lovejoy, certainly doesn't dress like a Catholic priest. Nor does the church depicted on the program seem Catholic.

As it turns out, Al Jean, the executive producer of The Simpsons, is also in disagreement with the Vatican.

Jean notes that the Simpsons attend the First Church of Springfield "which is decidedly Presbylutheran."

Moreover, Homer's diet would make it impossible for him to become Catholic. "I really don't think he could go without eating meat on Fridays for even an hour," says Jean.
