Missouri Attorney General Appeals Innocence Ruling for Convicted Killer Dale Helmig

Helmig has served 14 years in prison for the crime -- despite mounting allegations that the prosecutor (former U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof) withheld information at trial. Helmig was to have a hearing for his release this Wednesday, though it's uncertain what will happen now that the state's attorney general has filed an appeal.
In a statement late yesterday afternoon, Chris Koster suggested that the jury got it right when they found Helmig guilty of tying a concrete block to his mother and throwing her into the Osage River.
"Two separate entities - a Gasconade County jury and a DeKalb County circuit judge - have reviewed the evidence in this case and arrived at dramatically different conclusions," Koster said. "This is an extraordinarily serious matter. Because our system of law is one of checks and balances, it is appropriate that the judge's decision be reviewed by the Missouri appellate courts before it is rendered final."
