Carondelet Branch of St. Louis Public Library Closes for 2011
The St. Louis Public Library is on a self-improvement tear. Just six months after the Central Library downtown closed its doors for more than a year of renovations, the library's Carondelet Branch at 6800 Michigan Avenue will also be shutting down for restoration. This Friday, December 31, is its last day of operation until 2012.

The Carondelet library has been at its present location since 1908. Its iconic WPA mural, "The Founding of St. Louis" by Robert Rigsby, was added in 1934.
During the renovations, construction crews will add a new entrance, an elevator and ADA-compliant bathrooms, and the parking lot will be expanded. The mural will be cleaned and restored, and the library plans to update its computers and its collections of books, magazines and DVDs.
